why do deep nails give such a good coin signal?

twice yesterday I dug down to 10-11" only to find a rusty nail that gave a great 38-40 (on my x-terra 70) signal from all directions. Is there a way to avoid this? am I doing something wrong?

I guess you have to dig a few deep, iron nails to get the goodies! The same as pieces of wire and hairpins on top of the soil or just beneath! If you null out the smaller iron, you wouldn't get those whispers of the good stuff! Otherwise, maybe someone with more detecting knowledge can give you a better answer and elminate the iron! When the ground is wet, the iron really comes in good with beeps....Soooo, I guess ya take the good with the bad! Good luck and God Bless! You have been doing really well on finding the oldies...keep on, keepin' on with faith and :detecting: and you will do great! :) God Bless! Betty I have only used Whites Detectors and they are the older kind, as I haven't bought a new one since Oct 1994!

I dig very few rusty old nails, but do dig some. If it has been there a long time it has a big halo. I believe that the halo is fooling the machine. Start watching and you may notice that when you get to the nail, the point of the nail is in the middle of the hole. Not every time, but most.

why is that Mike? It has never happened to me until yesterday. I went today with my 10" DD coil and did not get one deep nail, but I did manage some wheats that were in the iron my stock coil missed

One clue I get but not always is when you're walking around the target swinging from different directions the targets seems to move.
Don't know much about the Minelab X-terra's, do they have iron mask or 2 dimensional discrimination? The Minelab Explorer will tell you the probability of it being iron by how far the cursor is to the left OR if you're using the digital screen on the Ex2 or SE you can see the chances of it being iron by how high or low the ferrous number is. Even with this technology you STILL don't know for sure until you dig it up! So really you're doing the best thing by digging it up!
