Why do people not like the stock Concentric coil

Kevin B.

New member
The Xterra 9 inch Concentric come standard on the 505 and the 705 and the 305. But when it comes to the 705, and maybe the other models I jusyt mentioned, I have heard many people say that the 9 inch concentric just doesn't do what they need!!!
Since I am getting a gold pack, and will have a decent coil at seperating, what would I need for deep bullets and maybe deep coins. The round 10 inch DD coil in 7 khz or in 18 khz???

I would go with the 10.5 DD 7.5 coil. I think it's the best all a round coil. it goes deep, covers more ground, it's better for the hotter type ground and it does a great job at finding everything from nickels on up to silver.

That's just my 2 cents.

As far as the stock concentriuc coil, it's a good coil, just in my ground a DD coil works better plus thgey separate better in my opinion. I agree with Mark, the 10.5" DD 7.5 frequency coil is a good, deep coil. Coiltek has bigger coils available but haven't heard much of these yet.

The stock works great in my soil here in Southwest Ohio. The soil here has moderate mineralization. The stock coils also pinpoints great. I do want the 10.5 DD coil. After using a DD coil(Gamma 6000/11"DD I recently sold), I really like the target separation it provides plus you do cover more ground with it.

The stock concentric on the XTerra's are one of the few that I really like on detectors Kevin. Much maligned like you say, but I think that is only because most of us like accessory coils due to different areas we like to hunt, junked to open ground etc. Plus we like to buy new toys.
I put the stock far and above the 10.5" DD. As most of the ground we use that size on is just off the heavy junk areas to open ground, I find the stock, in comparison, to hit deeper and with more clarity at depth.
There are cases, mostly common quotes, about the DD's handling some ground types better than the stock, but I haven't found that.

If deep bullet hunting is your main go with the accessory coil you are now looking for, I wouldn't be passing up the 14.5" Coiltek in 18.75khz. Unbelievable coil!
It'll cruise on the same ground a 10.5" will, and hit much much deeper, and is more sensitive.

Thanks Argyle!!! And, of course, I also appreciate the other replies as well. But Argyle it seems that you pointedly answered my question. It will be getting a spare coil soon. It wil lilkely be a coiltek. I am a bit torn between frequecies. I am looking at it like this: I presently also have a Deus. It perfrms best at 12 and 18 khz it seems. And pretty fair at 8 inches. But in an air test, and in my test garden.....it's 4 khz setting just would not perform as good.....depth-wise.
So having said that, perhaps a Coiltek coil that would be great on DEEP silver. Heck......I already see that this Xterra is going to benefit my pocketbook ONLY aftre I have a couple more coils!!! lol Which is JUST fine since I TOO like having a new toy (or more) coming on the UPS truck.
Gentlemen, and ladies too if there are any, just a quick question: Of the MINELAB coil choices.....which coil would compliment the 10x5 Elliptical (Gold Pack) 18khz coil? I like the looks of those round DD coils. My ground IS somewhat mineralized, probably not as much as in East Tennessee, but still mineralized none-the-less. Many of you have already said a 10 inch DD in 7 khz. I wonder how deep I can expect to detect a dime and still have an accurate TID nuber with the coil I just mentioned. I guess that there' only ONE way to find out. But alot of you folks have put hours and hours on this machine. Maybe I need to go back to Diggers E-Book and study the part about coil selection. I wish that there were more Xterra 705 videos on Youtube that were in English. But I surely appreciate all of your help, people!!! I should get my new unit this Tuesday. I can't wait to play in my test garden with it. I may have to add some targets to my test garden.

On the FAQFAQ page on this forum, there are links to a three part blog that Randy wrote on coil selection that might be of interest.

And I would add, that there is nothing wrong with the stock 7.5kHz concentric coil. It gives the most honest TID's, and because of that alone it is used as a benchmark to compare to. It sees pretty deep, covers open ground well, and is a good general purpose coil.

I'll also say that the 3kHz coils work very well on high conductors like silver and copper. The 9" LF CC has been one of my favorites, and until the new Coiltek coils came out it saw about even time on my machine as my 7.5kHz DD.

On my XT-70 in moderately mineralized ground (low to upper twenties) the 10.5" DD MF coil will accurately read a dime down to at least 6" or more. Suspect that the 15" Coiltek coils wouldn't be very successful in my area because of how much junk there is in the ground, especially small bits of iron.

I really would like to have one of those Coitek 15 inchers in medium frequencies, or even low freqency since I don't have a low frequency machine. Are the Minelab 3 khz DD coils (10 inch round) a force to be reckoned with in the old silver department??? That might be a nice companion to the Gold Pack coil that is coming on my machine. (tomorrow if the UPS doesn't drop the ball)

It would be....if there were such a thing.
Until the Coiltek coils came out, there were no authorized aftermarket coils, and the only 3kHz was the 9" CC. It has taken some time to develope and introduce the new coils, but I'm glad that I waited for them. There is a 15" MF All-Terrain that's been out for over a year now, and it would be an excellent coil for general purpose hunting, especially for covering a lot of open ground.

Old Longhair, I really appreciate your being patient with my questions. Barring any UPS failures, I should have my 705 tomorrow. I have a site in mind for it. But first, I'll read the manual and Digger's ebook again since I'll have the machine with me to see what he is referring to in certain chapters. By the way, Digger, I really appreciate your time and efforts, and SHARING them with us to benefity from them!!!! That is like...SO freakin cool. And even though i have only mentioned Old Longhair, and Diggers names, I actually appreciate ALL the replies. It would be so easy to let threads go by and not reply but y'all stopped and replied and I need ya to know that I appreciate it. Boy Howdy, I can't wait to hold my second Minelab detector. My first was an Etrac. I am going backwards ain't I? Well that goes hand in hand awith what I overheard a girl say about me in high school when another girl asked why she didn't hint around for me to ask her out: "But HE's so backwards." Man, if she ONLY knew how close she read it right!!!!! LOL Hey, but I can accept that fact about myself. The mainest thing is loving my neighbor as myself. And yall have shown plenty of love by helping answer my many questions. Happy Thanksgiving by the way.

You might be pleasantly surprised. With the right coil for your conditions and needs, you're are liable to find that Xterra isn't much of a step back at all.

I don't post much on this forum any more since I got my Explorer but I do miss my X-terra70. I'll say this, I ordered the 3khz coil from my dealer and never took it off. It was a great coil for coin hunting and just plain out did the other coils I had by a long shot. My silver finds went up as soon as I got it. Good luck and good hunting!

Thanks for all the replies. Every single bit of feedback, I appreciate it your taking the time to post.
Well, I got my Gold Pack Xterra. Got it put together. Having already studied the vids, and Randy's E-Book (thanks Digger), and the instructions, I managed to turn it on. And after some some re-studying of the menu button and how to tweak each setting, I learned how to Noise Cancel, Ground Balance automatically (or use Tracking), change number of tones, change sensitivity, volumn, threshold, etc etc etc.
So...I ran out to my buried (for approx one year) 7", 8", and 9" buried Minie Ball (which are really bullets and not true round balls). At full sensitivity, and having performed all the preliminaries, I started sweeping over the buried bullets. They gave excellent iron tones with occasional chirps. In summary because I have alot to do today....the Xterra with 5x10 coil did NOT lock on and hold to any of these three bullets. So.....
I found another part of the yard that is free of any underground metal debris: I buried 3 Rosie silver dimes. 4", 5", and 6". The unit hits solidly on the 4 inch dime from all directions. The other two dimes gets iron tone with chirps. But on one of the dimes I get a one way hi tone hit from one direction. (I understand that freshly buried targets are NOT a good indicator of the true performance)
I also buried an Eagle I Coat sized brass button at 9 inches. iron tone. I re-buried at 7 inches HI TONE all the way around (that was great to hear). I also buried a 52 cal Sharps carbine solid base bullet at 7 inches. Iron Tone with occasional chirps.
Oh, I'm NOT disappointed in the Xterra. Not at all. This has been my experience with 90% of the units that I have had. It's my funky dark red dirt.
I switched over to Prospecting Mode and hit them all easily. The prospecting mode will be my mode of choice in areas where I want to dig everything,
This is just a preliminary test in my red dirt here in western/middle Tennessee. The dirt here just shuts down any great depth. I am thinking that my next coil will be the 7.5 khx Round 10.5 inch DD coil from Minelab. But all in all, I am very impressed with build quality and look forward to many days afield with the new Minelab Xterra.

When I had my M6 I bought the 10.5 DD and lost depth in my CO soil so I sold the DD and stuck with the 9.5 concentric. Not sure if the xterra would be different here?
Good luck and HH

My soil is worse than your soil KB. When you read most of the advice here imagine that you live in Ohio and the soil is rich and black, and you can find a silver dime 8 inches deep no problem, then forget what they said and only read advice from mountainous states.

Since Minelab refuses to allow an 8 inch coil on the X-Terra series, I would recommend trying the 9" LF 3khz CC, or just sticking with the stock MF 9" CC. 10" to too wide. 6" is too short. For bad soil of course. If you get a 9" CC coil, in your test garden with a 6" deep dime, try raising it off the ground various degrees to simulate a narrower coil, just an idea.

Coils I own for the XT-70 and XT-705 rated by value of finds.

Based on about 2 years of hunting.

1) 9" concentric 7.5 kHz stock
2) 9" concentric 3 kHz
3) 6" DD 18.5 kHz
4) 10" DD 7.5 kHz

My experience in GA. clay.

Good Hunting,
Denny
