Why Ferous over Cond

cachenut

New member
Why do people prefer to use ferous over conductivity. The manual says recomend conductivity? What is different about it?

Joe.

Here's the obvious reason. "Target Separation" using Ferrous makes Iron Sound off in a low tone, and lets the silver sound off in a High tone. So if your in an Iron infested area you can separate the two better. Other than that, I cant think of any other reason. Heck I prefer Conduct, but If there's allot of Iron in the area than I'll use it.

Joe,

Many of us more experienced Explorer users prefer to run with little or no discrimination. If you run this way in Conductive everything on the top of the screen sounds high tone, which means both silver/copper and nails sound the same. And there are alot more nails then silver in the ground. If you run with less than IM-14 or so you pretty much have to use ferrous. About the only time I use Conductive is at a site that has lots of modern trash that hits to the right of the screen.

Chris and Migoldigger give some good advice. I use conductive and iron just seems to sound more shreaky if thats a word and silver although a high tone more mellow..of course a good coin close to iron can easily fool you. No matter what choice you make stick with it as switching back and forth for most can be mind boggling...At 67 my hearing is not the best, but I hear tones well and setting variability at 7 or 8 sure helps me rel the high coins and iron tones...Remember Expl. gives you choices and what is most comfortable and above all works for you is where its at...

Personally, I prefer conductive, but that is a personal choice, one in which I started with in the beginning. Not to say that ferrious is a lessor choice or should not be used. I picked one to begin with and stuck with it...

In my humble personal experience, the sounds you hear are totally different between the two. I have been hunting with "conductive" so long, I would not be capable of finding a coin in Ferrous mode.

ADVICE: Many people find great finds in both modes of operation, cond. & Fer... What no-one says is they are switching between both modes. In other words, in my opinion, no-one is expert enough to change modes and tones and be successfull like that.

Unless: They are unemployeed and have nothing better to do than metal detecting and do it full time...

IMPORTANT: Chose one or the other modes and stick with it, as in perminately! Stick with it and learn the sounds...

If anyone can switch between fer/con and be as efficient, my hat is off to them. I am not that good.

I have switched between modes to check an iffy signal. As a matter of fact one of the ways i learned to choose one or the other was to check how certain objects would sound in both modes. I started out using Cond. and after experimenting with both modes on a bunch of typical objects in the field i ended up liking Ferous more. Might be an option for you and which one you can relate to better audio wise. Both are good, but as some mentioned it might depend on your hearing and the sites/ground you hunt too. Experiment a little on known targets and see which you can relate to better. Worked for me. Most important thing is to NOT be in a hurry regardless which option you choose. Read up on it and get as many hours under your belt as you can. The more time spent in the field the better off you are. This is a great machine if you speak its language.

I like to hunt an area in the cond mode and cover it as tight as i can and when i have it to where the good signals are gettin slim i go back in and hit it in ferrous. I can't believe the good coins and tokens that for whatever reason seem to pop up out of nowhere. I think in the heavy iron spots the ferrous seems to do better and in the tab gob spots the cond. seems to do better. my theory? The monkey doesn't ask where the banana comes from, it just enjoys the banana..........hh.

I like the Tones to a variability of 10, it helps you identify targets much better when you learn them.

I was hunting an area w all sorts of chopped up beer cans yesterday and it was too tough in ferrous mode. When I switched to cond it seemed to get easier and pinpointing was better too.
