Why Not Use 'Trash Density - High' All The Time?

B-Ruce

New member
If setting Trash Density to High allows 'see through' of desired objects, why not leave it set at high all the time? My understanding is that if Trash Density is set to low, the signal will lock on the strongest target, regardless if it is discriminated out or not. But if the strongest target is not a desired one, why would you want to lock on to it?

Thanks for any help or advice.

Bruce

I agree also. That is the reasoning I used and I leave mine on all the time.

I agree also---and if you will check out Andy's book, I think you will see that he (and others) tend to agree as well. (pages 44, 51 & 122).-----BTW, I ALWAYS run in gound-difficult----deep-on----fast-off.----There's been some debate on that to, I guess.-----Those settings can (AND DO) make a difference.-----The thing to do is experiment---try different settings & see what works the best for you in the ground/sites you are hunting in.-----That's what is so great about these Minelabs (Explorers & Etrac), there are so many ways to set them up.------Thru trial & error, I know what is "dynamite" for me where I hunt but it might not necessarily be the best for you where you're at.-----So don't be afraid to try out different settings---just don't do a "Master re-set"!! ----SERMONS OVER!!-----Del

That might be but I think fast on breaks up the signal too much (in most cases). JMHO ------Del

I imagine the only reason to turn trash density high off would be IF you were hunting in all metal (wide open screen) which you can't really do to effectively with the Etrac due to small nails falsing to the top of the screen....so, I can't think of a situation which you would want to turn trash dens high off. HOWEVER, this is indeed based on the fact that trash density high is in fact doing what they say it does and before relying on that, you may want to test it for yourself on some co-located targets or a test garden to be sure.

Some masking(rejection) is necessary for the circuitry logic to function properly.

This is true--the trash density doesn't have any effect in "all metal".---The point I was getting at is to do some testing for yourself as to "cause & effect" before decideing on any setting(s)---to see how certain settings react to your hunt style/sites/locations.----I don't hunt in AM & almost all the locations I hunt in are quite heavily mineralized & with a GOOD BIT of trash (both ferrous & non-ferrous)---this of course, is why I like/prefer the trash density-high setting--but this is just one setting--a person needs to know how the different settings act AND react to each other & in the area you are hunting.----It isn't that you have to spend half the day testing & setting things up but a little knowledge of your machine/settings/hunt area goes a looong way.---I've been in this great hobby for years & I know I'm still learning---maybe one of these days I'll "know a little something"! :) -------Del

Hello Bruce,
I have run my E with the Trash density off on some hunts recently. I can tell you that if I am on my older sites that have been picked over already I definitely want it ON, this I am sure you know. I do have other sites that the machine can be run a little more stable and smoother with it off (my experience) but the coins are not mixed in the trash and the ID's are more consistent any way. My pref is for it on but I have experimented with it a bit on these cleaner areas. On one of the sites I hunted it both ways over the same ground. I did find additional targets even after the first hunt with the Density set ON. But I find that even if I don't change ANYTHING at all this can happen. So far my theory is to Start with it ON then try it OFF after to see if It improves depth. My E is really stable as it is so I only adjust it on sites that I have the time to test around a bit on.

Good Luck,

I usually try different setting on the first signal I get at a location with decent depth, 5 or 6". You can go into the menue and stay in it and try deep on/off, fast on/off, high trash and so on while sweeping the target. For me I've never found a area that fast on and difficult didn't give the best and strongest signal so I always run fast on and difficult. ken-ks

I will only use Fast On in medium to heavy trash. In an open area I like Fast Off so I can hear the smoother tones on deep signals and they are not so broken. But I imagine if you ran with Fast On all the time, you would get used to it.

Everybody, thanks for all the advice. So far, I have struggled with the audio ID the few times that I have used Fast On. I have normally hunted with Trash Density on low, deep on, fast off, and adjusted ground difficulty as necessary (more often than not, I have it set to normal as the auto-sensitivity usually runs over 22 here). But the last couple of times out, I have been running deep off, fast off, and trash density high. So far, I have liked this setting. I went back to an area that I had hunted a couple of years ago when I owned a Garrett Ace 250. I covered part of the same area that I know I hunted at least twice, and in an hour I found seven coins, four of them wheaties. It seems so effortless with the E-Trac, whereas the Ace really struggled through the trash. I think I will be heading back there in the near future to see what else I can find.

I loved the Ace, and for clad coin shooting it was great. You can cover a lot of territory in a hurry with it. But for finding the oldies, it can't touch the E-Trac (and for the price, it shouldn't!).

I do love the E-Trac, and after a year, I am really starting to feel like I understand what it's trying to tell me.
