today i found a place that looked GOOOOOD!!!!! best place i've seen since i started detecting. guy wasent home so i went to the neighbors house to see if someone lived there cause the place kinda looked abandon. he told me yes someone lives there hes down the road about a half a mile mowing around the old school he owns. i thought awesome two places in one. the neighbor told me hes an older gentlemen and should give you permission if you ride down and ask. so i rode down there he hopped off his tractor and was EXTREMELY nice. so i asked him first about the school he said no. he explained to me that when the phone lines were being replaced 10 years ago the guys that were working on the lines obtained permission to detect around the school and he was curious to what was there. here the sad part the guys that detected it took all the trash they found and threw it around the yard of the school(he keeps it very nicely mowed) so i asked about the house knowing it was going to be a no. he said 10 years ago i would of gladly said yes to both places but they ruined it for you young man. i said thanks for your time sir and went on my way. this is what upsets me. no respect for others property. to any of you guys out there that do this. please dont anymore it ruins it for the rest of us! im sure most will agree.

Public places with lots of people around, digging plugs is bound to be frowned upon, so I don't dig or detect when people are around. I haven't had the opportunity to go on private land yet, but will ask for permision if the occassion arises. I can only hope that anyone who detects before me follows common sense practices.
I spent 4 days detecting public beaches in Kelowna and Penticton. In every case, I took out the garbage of others. I also made it a point to show people that were interested in my finds, the nails, screws and other sharp objects that I pulled from the sandy beaches. I think I did a good deed for the next metal detectorist!

Might consider offering to mow AND pick up all the trash.... AND do the trim work. Good not to push it the first time though. Sometimes I've found that if you do the research up front, and share it (like the history of the school, old maps, old photos, etc) to demonstrate you're both sincere and serious, it can help bridge things.

Bad yeah, one bad apple can really, really leave a lasting negative result.

Nothing worse than hunters digging up Trash and throwing it around instead of putting it where it belongs.....in the garbage can. And besides that....who in their right mind would want to eventually waste more time on those targets if they revisited the site a second time....talk about a lot of wasted time in searching for Junk that could have already been discarded properly. Some people just don't care of just don't get it all together. That's why I wear a leather pouch so I can not only carry all the Junk I dig but to carry my Lesche Digger and my Brass Probe.....not to mention all the Clad Coins and Keepers that I dig.

Maybe if you swing by again and chat with the fella awhile, he will grant you permission Weston. Just tell him that you know that it is wrong to do such things and that you will even show him what you find if that would please him.....even all the Junk you dug. Best being found by a detectorist than sitting in the ground deteriorating away...especially the Pennies and Nickels. Hope you change his mind if you try again Weston. Good Luck and HH to you.

I agree Weston,and great post.
Very well put, I have been in a few instances also, and corrected them.
I even find myself covering holes squirrels dig,and mole hills holes,
because i want no one thinking i did it.
I happen to ask a guy that was the vice president of an old park,if he was ok with the way i dug
my holes,he actually complimented me and said he couldn't even tell i had been there.
That doesn't happen very often.
all one can do is do the best that they can,
and as you said,Have Respect.

Public parks along with privatel owned land have been put off limits so indeed if your lucky enough to get permission be neat and in real hot weather even watered down the plug.
As far as putting junk in your pouch two reasons come to mind if you come back won't have to dig it a second time and showing a bunch of junk to a maintenace worker or private land owner may keep you detecting the area with an invitiation to come back. Always remember the long closed park I discovered and was denied permission as some whacko dug a hole big enough that the landowner broke an axle on his tractor. Dig a trapdoor plug and use a drop rag my friends lest they ban a few other places...

You ought to have to sign a contract when you get a detector. It'd say I'd won't dig 'tap door' plugs when it's dry. I will remove and take all trash with me. I will not dig a round plug and kill the root system. No signature. No detector. jim

A couple of the guy;s I hunt with have meet and talked to the guy, he just doesn,t care. All he is going to do is ruin it for the rest of us. If I go on an empty lot and see the uncovered hole I just leave. Getting permission and cleanig up after yourself is important to the furture of all of to keep hunting. That's why so many parks won't allow us to hunt in them. The few times people have come up to me and said something about it, I always show them the trash in my bag and tell them sure glad some kid didn't cut themself on this. Great Post Weston, hope everybody reads it.

Ive been kicked out of city parks because of previous detectorist, It wasnt because of trash left behind, it was because they felt they had to get every possible target out of the ground. I do agree with the people that dont want ANYONE in there, the 2 parks that i was chased out of looked like crap. There were plugs about every two feet. It looks terrible when you have dried up spots all over the place. people need to have more respect all together. They are ruining it for future generations.

Some people do not realize how much trash we take out of a place. It does make a difference when detectorist do take that trash too. It is sad but true alot of them do not. That does make it hard on the detectors that do the right thing. Nice post weston.
