Wife's New Toy- * MXT*

George W

New member
Hello,
As you guy's know back a page or two.. I was asking about the MXT for the wife and trying to compare it in to my DFX and was even thinking about a M6.
As you know from my update back then we did get her the MXT 300.. Had it about a week now and took it out for the first time Yesterday! We took it over to a fair grounds. This place is well detected by many people after they pull up each year so pic-kin's are slim.. Trash was unreal, the place was littered with all types of aluminum pull tabs... I had picked up a dual headphone jack so I could hook in and see how she was dealing with the ground and trash. I never used it.. I set the MXT on it's preset and handed off to the wife and off she went.. We got nailed with flying blood sucking creatures of many types.. I knew they were around me-us but that's it when my wife and I hooked up again after a hour or so and she took one look at me I looked like I had a go in with a barbed wire fence!! Next time we'll use the bug spray!! Any way the wife was happy her first coin was a quarter she let out a yell I knew that it was a good thing.. All and all she found two quarters some pennies ans a few nickels.. Not bad for the first time out! I had found about the same with a few dimes in my mix and under a big old oak tree I got a good hit +14 with good tone I was running the stock Hi trash program on my DFX but there it was a gold ring 4 1/2" down. It's a nice ring only 10k but the center stone is a sapphire 1/4 to 3/8k with a small diamond on each side and there all set inside of a hart shaped setting. Yes it fit's my wife perfect too!! How cool.. I post a photo here as soon as we take one! One thing I did notice with her MXT was that in some places I was able to run the gain wide open..I didn't know that would be possible.. With the MXT set to the presets in the coin/jewelry program I was able to over load it with a nickle on top of the ground.. It looks to me that the MXT runs much hotter on the factory preset then the DFX does on any of the factory programs.. I feel that Whites should have set the factory programs at pre amp 3.. This would have been a much better starting point for the DFX IMO.. I didn't really use the MXT for myself yet but I think I'm going to really like it too! Thanks for reading! George & Penny

I 'm glad she liked the MXT. You said the trash was unreal, I hope she wasn't using the 300 coil. In the bad trash at least put on the 6x10. if the targets are in the top 5"in trash, I wouldn't run more than the preset gain. At higher gain the MXT will be picking up targets that are not even under the coil. (fringe targets). I like to run in the + numbers but in some situations it is not a good idea.

Penny,

I love my new MXT-300 also. I'm new to Metal Detecting and I think I made the right choice in buying a Whites. I always saw the ads on the T.V. , but never had the extra money to buy one. I just bought the book "MXT THE EDGE" I hope I learn more from this book. I'm going prospecting in July in Northern California and just a bit confused with the instructions that came with my MXT. I am hoping to get THE EDGE when it comes to hunting for the gold. It was funny during my first time out with my machine. I was so happy just to find my first penny. I was like, "Damn, this thing really works." I heard the signal and then looked at the screen and it said it was a penny. I dug the hole and found the penny about two inches down, like the pinpointer said. Well, good luck with your new friend and I hope it is as good to you as mine has been to me so far.

Hi George. Most people can use pre amp 3 or 4 with their DFX and I advise all in the DFX forum as to such. White's decision to set pre amp to 2 in the preset programs is so all new users will have a reliable functioning program right out of the box. There are some areas of the country that can not use higher pre amp settings that 2.
We have many programs posted that will greatly increase the depth and functionally of your DFX beyond the pre amp adjustment.

Rob,
Nope I had the wife use my DFX stock 950 on her MXT! i had the 6X10 DD on my DFX.. She wanted to use the concentric coil as she's new to it all and pinpointing with the DD was something she wanted to stay away from for now.. I had her run the MXT at the preset gain or a tad less.. I was just amazed that I could run it wide open but I just messed with it for less then 5 mins.. I wanted her to try running it in the relic mode and use the tones but once I told her that she would lose the icons she stuck with the coin program.. I'll have to count my trash but I bet I have around 50 pull tabs this time out before finding this ring and had not been out since the platinum ring I found I had in April that i had posted..From what I'm learning the one metal that gets discriminated out well is small iron. I do get less trash but have learned to dig the pull tabs and all other metals given there size.. But I am happy for the wife and her new toy that I think she actually does likes! George

Larry,
Thanks for the tips! Yes I do get into programing and trying out other programs for my DFX. I have been with it for almost 4 years now! I decided to use the Hi Trash program at it's stock settings because I only wanted to dig so deep at this spot and the trash was unreal.. I did go through it as I thought I wanted to change the DC for the 6X10 DD I was running and wanted to run a 3 filter but found that the stock program was at DC 35 and filter 3 I did turn on tone ID but it really did a great job. I think most targets fell into the 2 1/2 to 4 1/2 range but had a few in the 7" range.. I was amazed at this with such conservative settings..I also didn't expect to find a ring in this program.. I beach hunt most of the time and maximize the unit as digging is easy with a long handled sand scoop.. I except well down in the -40 range and dig all small targets and have done well so far.. Always more to learn though.. I found that if I try and weed out the pulltabs from nickels I really start to lose small gold and small rings for me it's easier to just did them.. Any pointers here? Thanks! George

Big congratulations to you Penny!!! You did fantastic for your first time out. You and George are going to have a blast your your detectors. My hubby has the DFX and I use the MXT and there has been days when I would pack a picnic lunch and we would be gone all day long detecting. We had a blast and detecting sooths the sole also. I hope you enjoy your MXT as much as I have mine. Good luck and again.....CONGRATS! Nancy

Here's a photo! Not the best picture. Maybe I can get a better one in the next few days. Raining here with a heavy overcast. The flash and distance I had to shoot at kills the shot.. 10k gold and it came in at +14 VDI George & Penny

Penny,

I glad that you like your MXT, you are going to be great with it, already broke the ice and found your first TREASURES with your MXT.

I still have to first Treasures that I found with my MXT, a bunch of pennies(1 wheatie), a nickel, 5 dimes, a hot wheel Nascar trunk lid, a key, and a wingnut, I will always keep these as they are a little bit special!!!!:bouncy:

The 1 wheat cent is a 1956, my birth year, made it even better, it was a sign that the MXT was for me!:clapping:

George,

Congratulations on finding the GOLD RING, the MXT even though you were not using it brought you good luck!!:super:(can you tell that I'm an MXT fan?:detecting:)

Ya'll are going to be great pair!!!:twodetecting:

Hi George!
It was a hard decision but I am glad that I got the machine. I have watched my husband detect for a few years and wanted to try so he took me out with his DFX and I found a dime in our own yard so I was hooked! It was a great feelig to make my 1st "find" on my own and I detected for several hours digging up bottle caps, pull tabs and some real change! I am looking forward to going to the beach! Thanks for your note and happy hunting!! Penny ;-)

Hi Nancy..

Thank you for your note of encouragement! I had a blast yesterday and think we will have fun together. George got his detector for the beach a few years ago as he got bored when we went. I don't need anything...the beach is my mental health time! I would read or look for sea glass and now he detects. Now that I have my own machine, we will try to spend more time there!! I will use any excuse to go! It will be much easier digging than yesterday was!!! I am sore today but feel good about actually finding something "on my own" !! I had given up for the afternoon when George found the ring! I was soooo surprised! Can't wait to see what I can find the next time! My 1st find was a 1979 nickle and you would have thought I won the lottery!! Anyway, thanks again...will let you know what happens next time!
Happy hunting.... Penny ;-)

Hi Skip..

Thank you for your encouragement!! I had a good time and was happy just to find "something"!! I have watched George detect for a few years so was sorta familiar with the way things are done but it was sooo cool to be able to make that fine on my own! I got my share of junk but most of the time I knew that it was junk! With more practice I am sure I will get better but am really bit by the bug! Can't wait to go to the beach! We are trying to decide where else we can go and find some "stuff" and not get in trouble! Neat you found a wheat penny of you birth year. I actually found 3 wheat pennies in 1 day (not detecting..) and got 1 in change, 2 of which were my birth year! That was last year!! Funny to get them...anyway, thanks again! I plan to continue to hunt for more stuff (after I heal...sore from yesterday..LOL) . Happy hunting ,,,Penny ;-)

Nice ring George,:clapping: I'm glade your wife is enjoying her new MXT.

You go girl!!! I have a sand scoop that you might like. It's called my "women's ingenuity" and I have a patent on it.... It's out in Larry's truck right now, but I will get it tomorrow and take a picture of it for you. Larry liked it so much, I made one for him too. They've been to Mexico sifting sand, local beaches and volleyball courts. I can't wait till you find your first gold ring! You'll do it too. HH to all, Nancy

No more pointers George, it seems you have it down pat. On the beach you just have to dig everything to get that gold. Sometimes a pulltab sounds better than a gold ring depending on how it is sitting in the sand. It sounds like you might be ready for a water detector and get in there where most of the gold is lost. If I lived near the beach, that's what I would be doing. :detecting: I had a BH ID and seldom used it so I traded it. One of these years though....................

Nancy,
Thank you!! I can't wait to find the first ring myself! I Just had a look and did see your sand scoop! Great idea! Yesterday morning my hubby ordered me a long handled beach sand scoop from Kellyco online.. They don't come cheap. I wish I had seen your idea sooner.. Thanks for all your help and support!! Penny

Larry,
No water detector for me not for a while anyway. We just got Penny that MXT so we have to start watching the money.. It was hard at the fair grounds with 3 types of pulltap's and all the combinations of pieces of them.. When I run into just one type it's no issue to make it sound trashy and tell it from nickels and small gold. But when you have so many types in one place I run the risk of losing the small gold.. It won't be for a few years before thinking of a water detector now.. Actually I was thinking about getting Penny the Fisher CZ-21 but it made more sense to me to get her the MXT for compatible with what I have.. We live almost 2 hours away from the salt water beaches.. With the price of gas now that make it hard.. But we have many fresh water beaches close to us that we should start hitting on a regular basses.. Thank for your thoughts and help! George
