Have some questions about beach hunting in the winter and would appreciate some advice and opinions, Any special clothing or gear that will make beach hunting easier this time of year? Also do you just hunt the dry sand or do you go into the wet sand to hunt ? Next question is I have a sov gt excalibur and a whites mxt and a f75 ltd to hunt with for this time of year which detectors should I take with me ? I am a Pa. farm field detectorist and would appreciate any additional advice . Thanks, Ezra,

the sov and the excal will do just fine on the beach ,,,try both the dry and the wet sand ...i like to do the wet sand on a low tide

Thank-you tomcatpl for your advise and I do appreciate it . Hopefully I will get down to the beaches in the near future to play Thanks Ezra.

I've never beach hunted in winter, but I have watched a lot of video of folks doing it. The ones that get in the water all seem to wear chest high waders and probably a lot of warm clothing under them.

Chest waders are a must, even if your not planning to get in the water. They keep you really warm. I hunt at low tide mostly and do get in the water, knee deep or so. I have the regular, lightweight, Cabelas chest waders. Have the neoprene style but they're just to heavy and can get hot. I wear long johns, a couple t-shirts, hooded sweatshirt and a rain coat or wind breaker for a jacket. I use an Excal and have been having a good season. Coin beach was producing for a couple weeks after Sandy. Got 15 coppers from the shipwreck as well as some other artifacts from the wreck. Pretty much sanded back in now. If your gonna get in the water there stay shallow, it drops off to 3 or 4 feet quick. My avatar picture was taken on that beach. We're there every weekend, all summer long. If you see the blue and white 4x4 Chevrolet van out on the beach stop by and say hello and get a cold drink. In the winter I usually park it across the highway and walk across but do drive over sometimes. Shoot me a PM and maybe we can meet up for a hunt, Joe.

For starters,......My advice is Chest Waders, Manual inflate PFD, a good pouch, and some neoprene gloves. Coin beach is Hot right now and ready for the pick'en, 2 gold coins this past weekend, and several coppers were found..I heard Gold so On the way home I stopped in for a few hours and got silver and copper, and a stone medalion with a cross on it...I ran into a friend and he was wearing his drysuit, which is a good option but expensive...........http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ubrgKXA3_0

All of the above info is good, I don't have a water proof MD (705) so I don't use waders. But I wear my Neoprene Surf fishing jacket. Balaclava headwear to keep the wind out.

FOR YOU GUYS with the Coin Beach report. Thanks. I was in the area around the 1st week of December and couldn't find any reasonably close parking for coin beach-so I went to other beaches. Ended up with a small gold ring. Did coin beach a few times and came up w just modern. After one NE storm a friend and I gridded a section and he came up with one copper.

Since you listed-and I don't mean to hijack- but could you tell any details about the gold and silver coins you mentioned? US-Irish-English-associated with the wreck or anything.

I was there twicw w/o a MD when the cedar stumps were showing.

PM sent GTzer....the place is hot! Just in...More posted, coppers and silver....OCCOP
Found my copper between the clumps of trees, wetsand...and my silver wetsand down past the trees near the bridge.

Thanks ,KinTN, surfman Old Beechnut, GTzer the great information.Have a question about what to use for shoes are 5mm dive booties the choice or is something else used for footware? Surfman will shoot you a PM within the next couple weeks when I can make the trip been down there about ten times and never had any luck but thats metal detecting.OldBeechnut I like your idea about the manual inflate PFD and I am going to pick one up and thanks for the update on coin beach. Ezra

Lotta online scuba places are having sales..121.oo and got several goodies. 2 pair of dive 5mm & 6.5 mm boots, mask, gloves, zipwax, and a uw compass.

Thanks Old Beechnut, I am gonna check the scuba sites and look for booties and gloves. Looks like you did really well shopping. Ezra.

Forgot to add one thing that can ruin it for me when it's cold- get eye protection. Wrap around sunglasses or shooting/protective type glasses.

Thanks GTzer. I always wear eye protection down at those beaches, especially the way that sand blows when it windy , its like being sand blasted and being the item thats going to be sand blasted. I have on order 7mm boots and 5mm gloves that will be coming soon. I dress in layers and add and subtract clothing according to my needs ,I always carry a sizable daypack for my stuff that seems to work best for me.
