With the gold stock price I'm changing my hunting priority and strategy

and requires collecting pull tabs.I'll stay with my plan of collecting lots of pull tabs to find gold rings.Yea I've read that book about sutler round signals for gold rings I'm not sure if its better for selling books than finding rings.Working on the flight line around jet fighters for four years kinda hurt my hearing,but I have found more rings than on these how to book covers.IMHO make friends with pull tabs and you will find lots of rings no matter what detector you use.

May I ask a newbie question?

Not having even laid eyes yet on my GT, I see that there is a meter option. Do most hunt with this meter or without? Wont the tones tell you somewhat what might be laying beneath your feet???

Just like every other detector with a meter the one on the Sovereign is just a tool to help you decide if you want to dig. This being a Sovereign forum I will say that the Sovereign Meter numbers are very accurate. The deeper the target the less accurate. But on shallow targets the Sovereign meter lets me cut a path through a park with no discrimination at all. And I will dig the nickles and no zinc pennies. Like I said the deeper the target the less accurate the meter. Just like every other detector.

Rdavisr,the meter will help with park or land hunting.Example a 180 meter in most places I hunt 99.9 % of the time a 180 reading will be a silver, clad, or copper coin,176 loud most of the time zinc,173-174-176 very early wheat's or Indian Heads.The meter will allow you to gain a couple of inches in depth by a wiggle lock on or to see climbing targets.With the 180 meter further important numbers are from 139-145 nickles this covers a large percentage of the coins being hunted.At this point I use a 550 meter better resolution and not as stable more learning curve but works very well and is underrated.The 180 or 550 meter will make a big difference for land hunting.Don't forget the S-1 probe I wish I could hunt side by side with another Sovereign user that doesn't use this probe so they could see the advantage with the Sunray compared to their handheld.

Thanks Critterhunter and Ron. You're right about the tone of gold. It's so smooth. I guess I need to get a collection of pull tabs and listen to them, like you said Ron. Cy a-Mark

"no matter what detector you use" ??? Ron, would it make more sense to use a cheap, lightweight detector such as a Compadre to dig all those tabs with? It seems like the gold ring ratio would be the same.

James,these one knob wonders may have an advantage weight wise and swing speed to sort through the pull tab mess.It did cross my mind also.

Interesting to hear your comment and I've decided I would still probably rather have the GT in my hands for the practice and to maybe someday learn to take better advantage of the incredible discrimination it has and also if nothing else dig all those deeper possibles. Off the topic, but I read somewhere that an Explorer with an SEF coil might approach an Etrac in performance. Is that true?. Another off topic, I guess should be another thread, has any one used or considered the Powerfilm solar charging system for AA's?

The Sovereign is my top choice,but an inexpensive low cost detector could work well for gold where depth isn't needed.Today's ring find around 6 inch may have been out of a clad detectors range.
