wonky misaligned explorer 2 screen.

The screen sometimes goes "wonky" is this a known problem with the explorer 2 . should i send it in for repair. This has been happening from new. Sorry for the out of focus photo. As you can see the screen seems to be split in the middle.

DID YOU TRY TO RE-BOOT HER ?
IF SO, THEN YOU BETTER SEND HER IN FOR A 'ONCEOVER'.
I'VE NEVER SEEN NOTHING LIKE THAT!
RUSTY, CHICAGO.

It is an intermittent problem as the problem will clear after i have re booted , it then might be ok for a week or two then the problem will come back. I would say its happened about 20 times so far over the last 5 months.

Unfortunately I'm not a computer expert but I think Minelab has a great warranty on their detectors. I have never had the problem on my old XS or the new X-II. From what I can see if the machine still works good and it doesn't bother you I would just go with the reboot, on the other hand if it bothers you and you can part with it for a couple of weeks I would send it in. Personally I would send it back to them.
Just my opinion.

Hey Ring. I am a service technician for office eguipment. You either have a ribbon cable to LCD connection problem, or the LCD is defective. Send it in, they will probably replace the ribbon cable and the LCD. Dont just live with it, get it fixed for it may give other issues in the future.

with one of my Explorer XS's. All else was fine and it still detected metal as it should have, BUT the screen was skewed, wonky and basically, for me ,un-usable(or JUST usable).Simply kept doing a reboot.
Like Travis mentioned, it is "either a ribbon cable to LCD connection problem, or the LCD is defective". It's been a unique and rare problem GOING BY what gets posted around the place and , in a way, glad someone else has experienced what seems to be the same problem.

I recently ordered a new push button control panel to start a series of trials to isolate the problem. The push button control panel is the only ribbon type cable connection on board, as all the pcb's, including the LCD are interconnected by gold(male into female) pins directly off the boards. I did firstly try to re seat all such connections BUT it never cleared the problem. It just got worse and eventually died. Funny, I thought it was little "experiments" on the Explorer XS that were the reason for it's ultimate death. After seeing this , I wonder.

Definitely send it back to Minelab if you're not confident enough to try and adjust/fix it your self. This problem needs attention. Should get sorted out very quickly, at least from knowing what Minelab here in Australia are like. Hope the U.K Minelab(if it's where it's going) are just as efficient.

Aren't electronics wonderful at times. I was having a problem with my XS awhile back when I laid it down to dig and then picked it up to start detecting again the darn thing would switch from the smart screen to the digital screen. I finally called Dick at Minelab and explained what it was doing and he said that he had never heard of an Explorer doing that before and suggested I send it in. Well, I thought I would wait until it happened again before sending it in as I don't know what I would do without my machine for two weeks and I guess as luck would have it that darn thing hasn't acted up since I talked with Dick. Maybe you should give Dick a call..........:) HH.

I took mine apart just to see the other day and found very fine sand sorta stuck the ribbon behind where it plugs in and also a patch of it was on the right side near the edge of the board. Looked like maby water has carried it inside and then it dryed leaving it attached. Anyways I brushed it out and made sure non was left inside. I don't ever remember using it in wet condition outside so maby water dripped on it from a coil from my other machine's in the back of my car or it fell into wet sand and I didn't think much of it at the time. Any way its been running great ever since then. Maby the magnetic properties of the sand were doing funny things to the current as it flowed. It was high mineral content.

All you have to do is hold the on-off button for a couple seconds and the detector will go back to the factory presets. You will have to go and change your settings back to the way you had them after you do this.
