G'Day Ian & Eileen from bonnie Scotland, Chris from Aussie land. I have primarily been working the woodchip rug rat runs for 2 years now and have done quite well out of them. I run an Ace 250 with the stock coil and have found over A$4000 in change, 14 gold rings (one diamond valued A$7950), 13 silver rings, gold chains, ear rings and silver chains, ear rings etc.
I have found that the most productive part of the playgrounds has been under the swing sets and under any bars that the kids hang upside down from. Nearly all of the rings have come from under the swings. I think there is a problem with the chain dragging rings off fingers. The next best place seems to be at the end of the slides and under any bridge between two sets of play gear. If I have limited time, these are the places I will hit first.
I will run my ace at 4 notches (sensitivity) which is more than enough to get the deep coins and treasures that are there. When I get close to the metal play gear I will notch it back to two and that will allow me to get in close to the play gear. I have found recently that if there is a set of table and chairs or just seats near the edge of the woodchips, that is a good place to look, people sitting down, coins dropping out of pockets.

Yeah I have found rings under the benches around the playgrounds. PLaygrounds can be a bonanza because you never know what you will find or what some kid has pilfered from his parents to bring for " show and tell", then loses it in the playground.

..Our family supposedly has a castle i think near Perth (Blair Castle?)..Anyway, I use a non-metallic garden trowel after moving away any excess wood chips with my foot..Check the excess pile if your depth indicator shows shallow before you dig..Hope that helps..Larry

Also, it has a less menacing appearance than some other digging tools (an important consideration when children/parents are nearby).

Something else that can help in locating these spots is a street directory. Some brands of directories have them marked in them. Here in Oz, we have the UBD which has them marked in. Very helpful if you are hunting outside of an area that you are familiar with.

Mick. That's all I do down here when I go playground hopping. I take the melways and just go to the parks and reserves marked. When I have done the park or reserve I use a pen and cross it off so I now where I have been. I usually get about a page in each trip.

Ian. I have a small matock type of tool about 12 inches long. Has been made with a spike one side and a tine from a harrow on the other. Small enough to carry around all day and serious enough when I need to dig a deep one.

Thanks for all the ideas and variation in digging tools.
I must say I use the 3 pronged right angled cultivator myself and it seems to clear the way quickly and digs well too.

I thought you might be doing that. That's what I do when I go to Sydney. I head out at the first hint of light and go through till 9:30. I sure wished I lived in cooee of it though. It just about kills me when I can't hunt places like Sydney. Watching that Surf rescue show on Capital recently, where it is based at Bondi Beach. They said that in the middle of summer, they get 40000 people on it in one day! I'd be delirious if I can hunt a site that gets that many people in a YEAR!!!
I've got a local park here that has play equipment in it that I have never found a coin in, despite looking regularly, but in the surrounding grass, I picked up $200 last year. The only problem is though, there has been several people recently who have figured out why.

I am an hour from Melbourne and I drive down on daylight and work to 3 or 4 in the afternoon. I used to pass on any playground that had kids or mothers in it but now I am ruthless. Don't care, mothers, fathers or kids I go for them. Would not have got the $8000 diamond ring if I had passed. There were about a dozen people on that playground and I just work around them. Most just ignore me, some ask what I am up too and when I explain that "I am hunting coins and jewellry and also syringes and other sharp stuff that can cut kids", they give me the appreacative nod and leave me alone. Have had a couple of park nazis have a go but they soon back off when you explain the "recreation reserve" rule. So all in all, most days are a hoot and I always come home with a pocket full of change and usually some jewellery. Good thing about Melbourne is there is hundreds and hundreds of "untried" playgrounds down there. They also have a habit of replenishing themselves over time too !

Yeah. That would be fun. When I was going for my goal on the last day of last year, I ended up doing that. The father at one play area gave me the filthiest look; grabbed his 3 year old son, and went to a neighbouring park.
When I had finished the spot I was in, I found him in the park I was going to next. I didn't have the heart to go and detect in front of him again. I think the stain would have been too much for him.
I also found one of those Pyramid rope play gyms nearby, with sand under it. But there was just too many kids there, so I left it alone. I'm sure glad I did, As the next and last spot I hunted, had that coin from the United Arab Emirates.
