Woods hunt today

Had a solid 42 hit on my 705 today, all angles....
Dug it, about 4" down I find a clad dime...out of the ground a solid 36..
Any ideas why? I ground balanced just before...was adjusting GB every 15 mins or so....

It could be a number of things, and possibly a combination. Moisture, orientation, and of course GB are all common factors.

Why don't you run Tracking ON? It constantly maintains more accurate GB than you can perform. Sample rate is every few seconds.

Could have had a small piece of iron next to the dime that caused an up-averaging. Did you go back over the spot in all metal after you retrieved the dime? Next time, try that.

Exactly what James said. I usually make it a point to double check all my digs. There could have been something else there not necessarily valuable mind you.

I did recheck, even switched over to prospecting mode and checked. I was convinced I would find a quarter or silver coin there but it was just the dime.....there was no threshold loss in either mode.
I will try the tracking mode, see if that helps in the darker soil. Just strange how soil alone or even coin angle would throw the ID off so many spots. My ground balance was staying in the 30s range so it couldn't have been off much if at all.

I downloaded Randy's book to my phone.
Already it's explained some stuff to me.
