WOT coil...

I'm buying an Exp II and considering buying this coil also. Reading some recent posts it's highly recommended. Anyone who has used one care to comment. Also I would really like a response from Bill W. on this subject.

KyJoe, I am here to tell you that the WOT is an excellent Coil but you gotta like to dig those deep targets, when they appear. I'm 6'2" tall with long arms..........Been up to my armpits getting the old good coins out of the hole (no baloney). Visit Docs site and read Charles (NY) review !!!

Happy Hunting !!!!!!!

If only I had one of those Coiltec Hats, that Doc has been giving away........I would be in Coiltec Heaven !!!

The WOT is an awesome coil. I personally haven't found any coil that can go deeper. Whether the WOT suits you depends on what type of sites you hunt. The WOT isn't for trashy areas for obvious reasons. You can come away scratching your head with the WOT in trashy areas. The WOT is excellent on those on-edge coins. In the right areas the WOT can almost make an area seem unhunted. Alot of WOT users can verify what I am saying. The biggest complaint for some people is having that much coil to swing. It not very heavy for it's size but it is alot to swing for extended periods. It's not a problem for me. The biggest thing you should keep in mind is the WOT will suffer from target masking to an extent just because of its size. The other drawback is the deep holes you have to dig... :)

A couple of finds come to mind when I think of the WOT just because of depth. Alot of the areas I hunt GB between 3.5 and 6 (out of 10) on my Fisher CZ-3D just to give you an idea of the mineralization variance. Last spring a dug a watch back that was between a quarter and half dollar in size at between 14 and 15 inches. This was verified by measuring the shovel I was using and how deep it was buried in the hole. Another instance was this spring with an IH at a measured 10 3/4 inches in bad soil. Now for some people that may not seem like really deep. But, around my area that is pretty much untouchable for any other detector & coil setup I have ever seen or used. Two years ago I dug a Flying Eagle penny between 11-12 inches. Don't think I go around measure how deep my finds are. But, when I find a target that I can see at the bottom of the hole and it's real deep I'll usually stick my probe down in the hole and note how far the probe is buried. I would have given up on the watch back but my buddies X-1 said to keep going.

IMHO, if you have the right kind of sites you can't go wrong with the WOT. But, be realistic in that the WOT can't find coins that aren't there and there's a time and place for the WOT. You definitely can miss coins with the WOT due to the Explorer averaging targets together. I hope I answered some of your questions. If not asked away... :) Feel free to contact me off of the forums too. HH!

I got my WOT 2 weeks ago. My hunting buddy is using an XLT. He's hunted a bunch of sites around here and told me of a few he said he'd covered really well. I went out there with my WOT and scored BIGTIME. At one small site I dug, no kidding, 30 coins.

THis weekend we found a virgin site with loose soft soil. When we stopped to compare I had dug over 50 coins to his 3 ( he dug quite a few nails). It was incredible! I followed behind him with my WOT and pulled coin after coin out. After we swept it well we went over it again, very slow and my manual sens as high as it would take (about 26). He saw me digging more signals and said "HOW CAN YOU KEEP FINDING COINS???" Poor guy was disgusted.

I felt pretty bad about wiping the place out. I gave him a few of my doubles and it cheered him up pretty good. I gave him a Mt Fuji 1 sen and copper 1 sen- both nice specimens! He's a good guy - just has the wrong machine (GO MINELAB!!).

The deepest I've gotten so far is 8 inches. The deeper ones repeat, but vary in tones. If it repeats, I dig it! If the coin is in the first four inches, it's like a bell ringing in the headphones- steady and repeatable.

I ordered grey ghost NDT headphones and my WOT at the same time from DOC, and I can't believe the difference! It's much easier for me to tell a good coin signal from trash compared to the stock coil and the KOSS headphones. I'm going on leave next month to Buffalo NY and can't wait to get to a small field I know of with my WOT- I CAN'T WAIT!!!

As long as the subject is the WOT, does anyone have any tips on how to pinpoint better with this coil. I find targets responding to the perimeter of the coil as well as to the center. It is not always easy to tell these hits apart.
Thanks

...my explorer xs and wot alongside a guy with a whites xlt (which I used to own but sold him, so I know it works) he took me to an incredible fresh site, I dug 6 v-nickles, 3 buffalos, 4 indian head pennies and 4 silver dimes, probably 12 wheaties all in the first 2 hours...he only got one wheatie which I located for him. the wot is my stock coil for the past 6 months, if I switch coils it is to the 5" excellerator in really trashy sites after the wot has swept it for all it can get.

I listen for the "best" sounding repeating signal. Yes it will sound at the edge, but it just doesn't sound right. Once I get a good repeatable tone I swing left and right and pull the coil back until the signal fades out. Then the target is right off the front tip of the coil.
HAsn't failed me yet

I have the Ex2 and a WOT and I detect in central KY. Be careful here. Your in KY and finding anything like a coin below 6 inches is a major accomplishment. The WOT is a great coil but you should learn the stock coil really well before you focus on extreme depth. I've dug buttons at 8 inches here in KY in hard soil the color of a blackboard using the stock coil. Once you've begun digging coins consistently at 7 inches in the typical KY dirt with the stock coil then put the WOT on the end of the stem and you'll have a real good time.

Thanks Jim
When in a target rich area, it is difficult to isolate a single target. I know the WOT is not effective in a junk-rich area but this is piece of ground is target rich in places and it is difficult to seperate the targets. I have found two and sometimes three targets within the circumference of the WOT.
I've tried tipping the WOT on its edge as a pinpointing technique but with marginal results. If it weren't for my Periscope, I probably would have given up on the WOT and gone to my 5" coil.
I'll try your technique.
Thanks

I love my WOT coil. The first three things I found was all silver! Being in California that is a rare thing to find. I have hunted that place before and those silvers was waiting for the WOT to apear before they was ready!
