Would you bother with a 10x14 coil for Ace 250?

I was pondering getting this bigger deeper coil. The thing is my son wants to join me out there and he loves the easy use of the ace cause he understands it. I wanted the coil for me but for the price would it be better to just give him the the Ace and buy a different upgraded garret? Or get another Ace with better coil? Or buy him just a cheapo one?

I don't like the cheapo route as he loves the Ace

I personally like my ACE 250 with the little sniper coil you find stuff others miss.. Seems I can pinpoint better and get in trashy areas.. I must admit I also have a GTI2500 when I want to hit larger and less trashy areas. The ACE with the sniper is a coin/ring magnet in parks. So my vote is don't bother with the big coil on the ACE.. But the main thing is for you and your son to both enjoy the hobby...My vote buy another ACE and do a little family competition hunting.

If your budget is limited, I suggest you just get another Ace 250. It is cheap in price, but priceless in quality. Do not waste your money on a cheap detector. Believe me, you'd wind up regretting it. I've been playin' around with that 10"x14" coil on my wife's Ace 250 and I love it. I tell ya, man, that machine is so much fun to swing, and it does indeed find the goodies. I've decided to go ahead and get an Ace 250 for myself so my wife and I can be a pair of Aces:twodetecting:That way, I can use that Excellerator and she can use the sniper.

Best of luck to ya' whatever you decide to get. Have fun!:bouncy:Happy Hunting!:)

Hmm very interesting. Well the Ace is very light and easy to use. How much added weight is the bigger coil? The only drawback from getting another ace for me is if he decides girls and phone are more important as he is getting to that age. I would have 2 Aces.... The only reason I was thinking different maybe a slight upgrade was for changing it up.

And he just may well stick with it while he does his other routine but heh he is a kid. Tho he is very much enjoying our time out there. So therein lies the problem possible 2 aces or an ace and a different Garret?

The sniper coil was a gimme as people just love it.

on my Ace 250..I hunted a demo lot first with the sniper coil, got 4 good coins,,went back an hour later used the large 15" coil(there's a name for it?) and went dry....not sure what to advise...but honestly if you want depth you need a good size coil I think..but you are always trading weight/performance imho hh ojm

Don't buy anything cheaper than the Ace. It's perfect for young folk. Why do you think you need a 10 x 14.

Not sure which coil you are referring to. The largest Ace coil that Garrett sells is the 9x12 coil
Now, some third party companies do make larger coils, but I'm not sure if that's what you
mean or not.
If you need another machine, I'd go with a 2nd Ace 250 if you don't want to spend too
much on a 2nd unit. You know what to expect from it.
Myself, I think getting the larger coils can be a good way to increase the depth
and pay less than you would for a higher cost machine.
But.. I've never seen any real decent reports on the newer third party coils.
No comparisons to the Garrett 9x12 for instance. I noticed the price of the
third party coil I saw from one company was quite expensive. A good bit more
than the Garrett 9x12. While it might be pretty good, I haven't seen any reports
good enough to say if it's worth the extra money vs the 9x12 or not.
"Saying it "works great" doesn't tell me much.. "
I want to see detailed comparisons to the 9x12 before I plunk down
that big cash for a third party coil.

So until I do, I can't really recommend it too strongly when you can get the 9x12
for a good bit less money. The 9x12 is still a good bit larger than the stock coil
which is 6.5x9 or something like that. And it will give you a good two more inches
over the stock coil on coin sized objects.
Myself I have all three coils, and find them all handy. They make the machine a good
bit more versatile, and will extend it's useful lifespan before you might consider a
better machine. And even with all three coils, I think it's still less money than the
next grade up in machine which is the 1350, or whatever is next up the ladder.
Anyway, I vote for a 2nd Ace 250, and a two thumbs up to extra coils as needed.
BTW, the sniper coil is great. I actually usually recommend it as the first add on
coil, unless you know you are going for large open spaces and need a big coil.
You might not cover a large area at a time, but the sniper on the 250 is deadly
in busy areas, and still goes fairly deep. Easy 5 inches, and some report a
bit more. I'll say 5 inches just to keep it conservative. I don't like to over hype
specs..
Ditto on the 9x12 vs the stock coil I've actually seen 2-3 inches deeper on the
9x12, but I'll say a sure 2 inches just to keep it conservative so one doesn't
buy one and not get what they expect going by my jibber jabber.
BTW.. I'd avoid the Ace 150 unless dirt cheap. I think the pinpoint mode
on the Ace 250 is worth the extra money. The Ace 150 is not a bad machine,
but not having a pinpoint/non motion mode would drive me batty. Not precise
enough for my tastes. Also the pinpoint mode can be used as an optional
detect mode.
Well, there ya go. My usual $129.39 worth..

If you plan to do any relic hunting on and around the farm fields, the 10x14DD
will do a nice job for you. It will cover more area and you should be able to zero in
on deeper targets. I just bought a larger coil for my other detector, an MXT and
can't wait tyo take it out for a run. At some point I will get the 10x14 for my Ace 250.
It just depends what kind of hunting you want to do.

Well its for the large fields I will be doing. The Kelly co 10x14 is the one I was referring to. So the bigger coil is not good for larger areas or coins just relics? The only reason I was asking is my neighbor has his GTI 2000 that's a 93, he putting in this weekends garage sale and he said he would sell it to me for 300 or so. Looks like brand new and not a scratch.

So I was deciding between another Ace or spending a bit more for that one. I just not sure. Is a used 2000 for that price good?

GET THE GTI 2500!!!

He told me wrong I looked at it its the 2000 not the 2500. And its a 93 but says he used it five times. Well it looks like it just came out of the box. So no 2500 but is that still a good price.

I was concerned with the age so I told him $225. He is thinking about it. So if he says yes I will take it if not Prolly get another Ace till I get better at this.

So to coil or not to coil. 9x12 or 10x14DD ?? Thats my last question.

The other way around. The big coils are good for covering more ground per
pass, but also a bit more depth, which is fairly linear with coil size increase.
Ya know, I was looking at that 10x14 , and with the current $99 price, it may
well be a pretty decent buy if the coil lives up to what it should do. In theory,
if it's working right and properly tuned, it should be slightly better than the 9x12
in theory. But like I say, I've never seen any real comparison reports.
But at $99, I'd be much less paranoid to try one vs the much higher old price
they were quoting. I forgot what the 9x12 goes for, but it should be close to 90-$100
also, unless they have a deal on it.
If you are doing large fields, a large coil would not be wasted $$$.
