Tater,

Tesoro has a great little "starter" machine, it's called the "Compadre" and sells for $150 - $200 (depending upon where you buy it) NEW! I bought one in December at a metal detecting store for $181, but have seen it on the internet (Tesoro site) for $159.

I have six detectors and they all have a special use. But I'm also a Civilian Volunteer to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Dept., Crime Scene Search Unit. ----- My Minelab GP3500 is too bulky to use at crime scenes, my other machines look too deep and for larger targets than what I need at a crime scene. The Tesoro Compadre is very light weight, simple to use, and picks up all metal ---- which is helpful to me when looking for expended rounds, lead, and weapons. I have purchased two additional Compadre's for my grand daughters to learn to metal detect.

I believe this is a pretty good machine to use as a starter.

Hope this helps.

Tater, You should be able to pick-up a tesoro Compadre on this forum for around $115 shipped, but keep posting because it may take a couple of weeks to find one!!
BEST OF LUCK, Les Robinson
