x-terra 305

Just bought 305 as a back up detector for Safari. Any suggestions. Right now it looks lika a big dissapointment for me, no depht at all.

The 305 is an improved version of the 30. Have a look through the FAQ X30 section at the top of the page as a starting point. But a couple of points to keep in mind, you are comparing a $1KUSD detector with an 11" DD coil to a $400USD with a 9" concentric.

Using the 10.5" MF 7.5kHz X-Terra coil would make it a fairer comparo. I've not used a Safari but I will venture a guess that DD versus DD the X-Terra will be a little quicker in seeing targets in trash. With the 305 equipped with the 6" DD HF it will provide a combination that will allow you to re-hunt areas you consider hunted outed with the Safari. And I honestly believe, as many on this forum have found, that the 6" HF DD will surprise you with what it is capable of.

I usually continue to go back and attack areas with different detector/coil combination's. And I know from experience that if I were using a stock coil on any of my main detectors, and then went back with the 6" HF DD on the 305, that the number of newly revealed targets would be an eyeopener. If you hunt for long stretches(hours) on each outing, running the Safari till you get a bit arm weary, then switching over to the 305 with the small coil and covering the same area would be a powerful strategy to maximize your field time plus recovery rate.

Take your time to get to know the 305. I had the 30 for 3.5 years and was very impressed with it. I tended to grab it over my Explorer. I bought the 70 just before the models changed, and enjoy that as well. I have a friend who has the Quattro, then bought an X-Terra and didn't like it. It was only because he hadn't adjusted to it.They are just different beasts and you will need to remind yourself till you become comfortable with the X-Terra. It could take some time, but the more you compare the 2, the more you will frustrate yourself (It happens to me every time I buy a new detector). Apart from coil sizes, the area where the Safari will outclass most detectors for depth, is wet beach sand. You can't argue with an FBS detector in that environment.
Good luck with the 305. I hope that it will work out for you.

Bought that 10 elliptical DD coil 18khz and i forgot the manual ground balance. Now im happy its amazing how accurate that little machine is. From field i walked with Safari thousand times i found 3 more coins and a tiny silver hammered.
I like that i dont have to listen that orcestra what Safari makes. Machine is quiet and if something there it makes a beeb. Now i leave my Safari to home for a long time.
