X Terra 505 setup help

Hey guys I just acquired this 505 and I had a 50 at one time so here's my question. I am a relic hunter primarily and was wondering what set up would be best to distinguish conductive from ferrous and how to get the most in ground depth I will be using the 10.5 MF DD coil while hunting.

10.5 its a very good coil and works awesome with 505. Just learn to Ground balance first and raise up the sensitivity next. I run mine almost every time with 18 sens, I can get a great depth to a foot deep even more. It can discriminate out anything and if you are a relic hunter and your after lead try the off setting. I am after coins and a + off set helps me. Threshold helps with low conductive targets.

I've been using the X505 ever since they come out with it along with the 10.5 MF DD coil. I set my Threshold just enough that I can hear it, not too loud. Most times I set my GB a lil on the positive side which is the (-) button unless I'm in real mild ground then I set the GB to the negative side which is the (+) button. The Xterra's are backwords with their GB, lol. I try to run my Sen just as high as I can, I will put up with a lil chatter in hopes of getting more depth. Make sure your swing speed is no faster then a 4 seconds and keep that coil as close to the ground as you can. also if your in a area that has a lot of iron sometimes it helps if you run in AM with 2 tones. One tone for iron and one tone for everything else.

Thanks for the help guys I believe I am going to really like this machine. Mark is this the set up your using on relics? If it is what kind of depth are you getting on bullets? Has anyone done a TID numbers list for relics?

Sorry I forgot to say that I hunt for coins. We do not have much for CW stuff here in Iowa. I have found a few 3 ringers when I lived in southern IA

Mark, I thought the lower pitch of the GB tone would be considered negative, & hitting the + button would make it more positive? Maybe I need to re-read my owners manual. Just read the manual again, now I see what you mean. Thanks again, Scott

I do not know why the GB is setup that way on the Xterra's but for ppl that have owned other MDer's with GB it can be a lil confusing for them.

I like to run my GB a lil on the hot side ( more positive ) I find the best GB for the area I'm at and then push the (-) button one or two times to make it a lil more positive.

Ok, I do the same thing, but I thought I was running negative, haha! I was thinking of my Vaquero GB. I have read though, when looking for smaller targets, (ie small gold nuggets) running more positive is preferred, and to get a bit more depth (but less sensitivity to small nuggets, etc) run a bit negative. Ok here's another question is All Metal any deeper than a disc mode with nothing notched out? I am a listen to it all hunter and plan on running in two tone to hear the low iron tone and the high conductive tone, I figure this is what I will be doing while relic hunting and probably use the 3 or 4 tones setting while coin hunting.

No. The All Metal mode is not a true all metal mode as it is still a processed mode that only accepts all metals, and it carry's the same depth all other coin modes do.
The only concernable tone and segment difference you should find between All Metal and the Pattern Modes, is that the Pattern Modes will start miss-placing some junk targets into segments until you do a quick Factory Reset. I've noticed most of my units will start miss-placing around the 30 minit mark if notching is brought into effect with sensitivity high, whereas All Metal will take a few hours most days before a Reset needs to happen.

The Ground Balance mode is a pure and full All Metal motion mode and runs very deep. As you're a 'listen to it all hunter', try the Ground Balance mode on your relic hunts when you may feel outright depth is warranted, and switch to Coin Mode over targets. It won't pick up the deeper ones the GB mode will though.
Do give multi tone a go, in All Metal, an open disc pattern, or a slim pattern. We probably nearly all laid off it at the start, due the whole pinball effect, but that dissapears real quick and you tend to isolate and judge a target quicker with it.

If you are a listen to it all hunter, you should give the 99 tones a shot! Discerning trash is better with NO notching and multi tones, as you can hear/see all the targets (good & bad) and there is less chance of missing a good target that is adjacent to trash. Check out Randy Horton's (Digger) book "Understanding Your X-Terra" on the Minelab site. He is the man when it comes to the XT (not to mention Longhair, of course). The book explains the use of multi-tones and why it makes the X-Terra so good in trash. To get the most out of the XT, 99 tones is the way to go. After finding targets in spots I previously hit when using disc, I was convinced.

X2 read randys book, it's free. What a difference with my 505 after i read it. I run in all metal, 99 tone's which there isn't 99 tones. but set it for that.with this set up i find more deeper and smaller stuff.
