X-Terra 70

I picked up a used X-Terra 70 the other day and I have a question about the tones. When ever I turn it on, it has a constant tone coming from it even though it's not over any type of metal. The tone will change pitch when over something, but it will still be there when you move it away. The only time this constant tone goes away is when I select pinpoint. Also, lowering the volume doesn't help either. I haven't been able to find out anything about this to know if it's a problem or not or if I purchased a malfunctioning detector. Any help with this would be appreciated. It also has 2 coils, a round and DD, and does it with both. Thanks for the help.

If it's not over some type of metal then it shouldn't give you a constant tone...do you have the manual with you? Try to do a factory reset and see if that takes care of the tone.

Let's wait for the others to chime in.

is it the threshold tone ? a constant unchanging buzz?

BP

Probably is the threshold 'hum' that you are referring to. Threshold should be adjusted to a barely audible hum in the background. Tones should be adjusted to your preference of one, two, three or to multi-tones.

Please read Randy's e-book on line to understand threshold vs. 'tones'. It is the best use of your time to help understand the X-Terra line of detectors and for getting the most out of your X-Terra 70. It is available for free ...

Randy (aka "Digger") is to be thanked again by all of us X-Terra users! :clapping: Without his great wealth of knowledge and experience and his willingness to share it with 'us tech challanged detectorists', most of us would not understand how to use these machines.:super:

I agree. Definitly s threshold tone. Read the manual and adjust it according to what your ears and brain can tolerate. You can even null it completely out if it is an annoinece to your style of hunting.

If you don't have a manual, they can be found online. Another good idea in addition to what has been mentioned above is to carefully pry your coil cover off the coil and give both a good cleaning before reinstalling the coil cover. Until you have a chance to print off Randy's book, you can get much of the information from the FAQ section at the top of this forum and from Minelab's Company site.
