x-terra 705 gold pack or normal pack

New member
i am looking to buy an e-terra 705 from kellyco metal detectors. However there is a gold pack with a differetn coil for the same price as the normal x-terra 705. What one should i buy and what is the difference between the two?

I have the round coil . It depends on what and where you will be hunting. The 9 inch coil is 7.5 khz and gets good depth and does good on coins. It is also waterproof . The other coil is not waterproof only water resistant. It does well in trash and hits a litte better on gold and small items. I have fout coils and they all have there place. Both coils that kelly co offers will find good things. If you have high mineralized soil I would go with the 5x10 if not then the 9inch coil. Hope this helps.

Great advice from 7 centsworth. Consider also: that if you eventually end up with both of those coils- the 9" 7.5 is $40-$55 less than the 5x10.

The Gold Pack includes the elliptical DD coil at 18.75kHz. Having the high frequency coil as "stock" is why they tagged it the Gold pack. The "standard" pack has the 9-inch concentric at 7.5 kHz. HH Randy

Mine is a Gold Pack, my brother has a non-Gold Pack, he swapped the coil for the stock Gold Pack coil as his go to. Realizing that soil from different areas is different, that works for us here in PA, maybe not for you.

Hey HotRod,

I'm in the same boat as the original poster. I was set to order the standard coil package later in the week until I saw your post. I'm from SE PA (about 25 miles NW of Philly) and the area used to have a lot of farmland and forests. I've been looking high and low to see how the area is classified as far as mineralization goes, but the only answer that I could come up with was to try a coil to see how it worked out or to find out from someone else that MDed in the area.

For me, the pro for the standard coil is that it is waterproof (I may eventually take it to the Jersey shore) and is mid-frequency and I guess a good starting point...but the pro for the Gold Pack coil is that it costs a little more so if I eventually need/get both coils I could save a couple of bucks by getting the Gold Pack now. But for now I intend to coin shoot and relic hunt.

All opinions or advice are most welcome!

Thanks,
Jellyfish

I think it also depends on whether you will buy more coils in the future. If not, I would stay with the 9" only because it is the medium 7.5 kHz and is waterproof. More of an all-purpose coil and has many happy users.
There are other choices you might like for the beach like the 10.5 DD and 6" DD. Every coil has it's place so only you can know what your needs will be. If your are not sure then go with the all- purpose coil.
If you decide you don't want the coil later on, you can always trade it to someone on this forum butt I bet you keep it.

ya that is very good information. I am going to start off with all purpose metal decting so i am going to get the 9" gold pack

I was disappointed to find that not all coils were waterproof, that was what I was used to from my other machines. I was also used to concentric coils and now I am completely sold on DD coils. The one who is the expert on what coil is best in PA is Mapper65, he owns I think every coil that fits a 705 and he has done extensive testing. He has some theories of what works best and he chatted back and forth with Mr. Hoagland (if I recall correctly)about these when we was testing them. Personally, I have only used the stock DD coil that came with the Gold Pack, as well as the 9" stock coil that came with the non-Gold Pack unit. Fortunately for me Mapper65 has them all and I can borrow whatever of his that I want, I really just don't feel the need to. I think the 6" would be handy for picnic pavilions and trashy areas, that would currently be the only one that I would pop for if I was looking.

I would suggest PMing Mapper65, he can fill you in on the scoop.

Wait a minute if you are a coin hunter I would get the stock 9" MF CC instead of the 5x10" HF DD. Yes the 5x10" HF DD has better trash separation(between targets very close together) and will find very small gold objects better(like very fine gold chains, very tiny gold earings, very thin gold rings, very small gold nuggets, etc.) but the 9" MF CC(Concentric Coil) will go substantially deeper on coins and coin sized objects. Depends on what you are mainly doing?

I am mainly going for coins and live in Arizona..... and i bought the Regular 705 with the 9" concentric coil 7.5 mHz... I soon found out that Arizona soil is highly mineralized and went out and bought the 5x9 DD ellipical 18.75mHz coil and this greatly improved my ability the hunt in high mineral soil....... the concentric coil is useless to me out here and i should have bought the gold pack to start with...... now if you have regular soil that is not highly mineralized the 9" concentric will go deeper and is probably a better bet..... but now if your working heavy trash areas and still have regular soil the ellipical DD will separate targets better and you'll have better overall success. It's probably easier to buy the gold pack then buy the regular 9" ellipical later because it's cheaper..... I will still keep my concentric coil as i plan to be traveling around the country and that is a good coil for most places of low mineralization.

Hi guys, my ears were burning so I figured my name must have been used in a post. ha ha ha

Here is how my story goes with the coils that I bought. I started out with the stock concentric coil. It worked pretty well but I do have to say that I hardly ever found any nickels with it and that may have been because I was still green with the detector. After about two months I bought the 10.5" HF coil because I was planning on doing some beach detecting. I figured I would try out the new coil rather than waiting until I got to the beach. Almost immediately I felt it was leaps and bounds above the stock coil. Guys, please keep in mind that I am making these statements based on using the detector in the soil composition in my areas but you may have the stock coil and love it. I don't dislike that coil, it just hasn't given me the best results.

I was so impressed with the 10.5"HF coil and although it worked great for me, it was a little too much coil to use close to picnic shelters. That's when I bought the 6" HF DD. Obviously, it's pretty much the same as the 10.5" but just smaller.

Buying the 10.5" and 6" MF coils was pretty much on a whim. I did some more reading about coils and was really second guessing that maybe I would do even better with the MF coils. I closed my eyes and hit the submit button on a Minelab dealer's website and a few days later the MF coils showed up along with the charges to my debit card.

After putting many hours on them in my soil, I was able to determine that these two coils were different than they high frequency counterparts. I'm not really a fan of the 6" MF coil. I just think that the HF does a better job at the same task. The 10.5" coil seems to give me a little better depth than the HF coil but also seems to pickup more can slaw. It's also gives you less precise readings on nickels than the HF coil.

My favorite coil is the 10.5" HF DD. It's just a great all around coil. The readings are sharp and reliable. If I feel that I have fully detect an area and go from the HF coil to the MF coil, I will very rarely find a large number of additional coins. If I fully detect and area with the MF coil and then go back over the same area with the HF coil, I will typically find a notable number of additional coins.

If I had to list the coils in the order in which I use them, they would be as follows.

10.5" HF DD
6" HF DD
10.5" MF
6" MF (probably only used this four times during the 2011 detecting year)
9" Stock (I have not used this in the last year)

I will always start out with the 10.5" HF coil. If thing aren't going very well, I will switch to the MF coil after and hour or so and see if maybe I'm dealing with different soil than I am used to. Having all of the coils doesn't make you a better detectorist, but knowing when to use them and their characteristics can help things a little. You would think that if I went detecting with someone that only had one coil that I could run circles around them. I can assure you that is not the case. Although I usually do pretty well, I was detecting with Hotrod53, our mother and uncle. We were all using 705's. Hotrod53 and Mom were using the gold pack coil, our uncle was using the stock coil and I was switching between two or three coils. Mom found about 2 indians and a few other coins, Hotrod53 found I believe 4 indians and a seated dime. My best coin was just a 40 something dime.

So how is the 18.75kHZ DD gold coil? I live in ct and am thinking if I should get the gold pack or the 9 inch coil?

Very very good report mapper65. Yes the round 10.5" HF DD coil is the coil I have permanently attached to my machine now. It is also my favorite coil for what I do.

nathanya, mapper65 sounds like he does not have the 5x10 HF DD, but Joe Z does, I also have this coil. How is your soil in CT, is it typical black dirt and sod or high mineralized soil? If you have very low mineralization with black dirt then get the 9" MF CC, otherwise get the 5x10 HF DD for working in tight quarters for trash separation which also handles minerals in the soil better.

Then get a second(or more) aftermarket coil, either the new Coiltek 15" MF DD WOT, 10.5" HF DD, 6" HF DD, and/or the 9" LF CC depending on what type of soil you have and what you are doing.
