x-terra 705 gold pack or normal pack

Thanks GTzer,

I've been looking at the links that Digger provided in your mineralization thread and reading more about the soil types of PA than I want to know in order to make an informed decision on a coil with my detector purchase. As it stands right now, I think that the MF standard coil might be a little bit better suited to my particular area, but that could change several times before this day is over. But on the other hand, the advantages and value of the Gold Pack coil (as you state) are hard to overlook.

Just tryin' to help. I know the choice made me crazy right down to the phone call to buy. I'll take as many of these threads as i can read to try and get some absolutes. In fact if you find the answer-please let me know. Eventually I will keep a log of mineralization and GB so that I may help others with the same questions.

Weight is a major factor for me- so I'll most probably get the 9" (instead of the 10.5") MF as a 2nd coil. After that- who knows.

From working a 6.5 ghz MD for 29 yrs around here I can tell you that coin targets will be deeper & louder with a LF in the right soil.
I'm looking forward-initially- to going back over some target rich -trashy-mineralized sites with my 10x5.

I am having a very hard time deciding which pack to get. Does anybody know what would be best for the soil in ct?

Thanks to EVERYBODY who posted in this thread and GTzer's threads regarding his 'decision/reenforcement' and 'mineralization of SE PA'. I finally decided to order the 705 Gold Pack with the HF elliptical coil. This may or not be the perfect coil for my situation, and like GTzer I was pulling my hair out on this final decision. However, there were enough pro arguments for it that gave it the edge, at least to me. It basically came down to the fact, and something that I did not quite appreciate early on, that just like there is no one perfect metal detector...there is also no one perfect coil. Now, most of you guys already knew that, but being a Newbie I guess I had to reach that conclusion for myself.

Now, I don't know about you guys, but early on I readily identified the X-Terra 705 as the metal detector that I wanted to go with in my initiation into metal detecting based on its' flexibility. I know what I'd like to do now (coins, relics and just a little bit of beach hunting), and maybe later on down the road I'll settle into a specific niche with something more specialized. But then again, maybe not. So simply based on its' flexibility it seems as if it is a keeper.

A week or so ago I started to stray (please forgive me) and began comparing the 705 to other metal detectors. But for all things considered (especially weight and user friendliness) I kept coming back. I'd like to give a special shout out to GTzer, who understood my situation in looking for answers since he recently went through the same decision making process, and to my fellow Pennsylvanians HotRod and Mapper who are on the other side of the State even though they are probably Steelers fans. I'd also like to thank Bart @ Big Boys Hobbies for putting together a nice package for me and for very promptly answering my emails and phone calls.

John,
probably feel a little "lighter" after making the choice. I know I did. Thanks for the acknowledgement-glad I could help.
I know that this site and all of the input I received definitely helped me. It is my intent to contribute.

Gee...I'd be surprised if that link from jerydon was not pulled REAL soon. There's a pretty strict linking policy on this site.

It's been edited.
