X-TERRA QUESTION

IVE BEEN DETECTING WITH THE 305,SINCE LAST DECEMBER. I USED IT ON THE BEACH OF SOUTH TEXAS,DURING THE WINTER. FOUND ALOT OF COINS IN THE DRY SAND,BUT IT DOESN'T DO WELL IN THE WET SAND OR WATER. (NUMBERS JUMP ALL OVER). I'M BACK IN KENTUCKY NOW. INSTALLED THE 7.5 HZ 10.5 INCH DOUBLE D COIL.SEEMS TO HAVE BETTER DEPTH AND SEPARATES JUNK FROM GOOD TARGETS.BETTER. I DISCRIMINATE OUT -4,4,16 AND 20.( THIS SEEMS TO GET RID OF MOST NAILS,FOIL AND JUNK). THIS LEAVES 8 AND 12 FOR NICKELS ,27 AND 32 FOR PENNEY'S AND 36,40 AND 44 FOR DIMES,QUARTERS ETC.
I'VE BEEN HITTING BALL FIELDS,TOT LOTS AND SCHOOL YARDS. I FIND ALOT OF PENNEY'S,DIMES AND QUARTERS,BUT VERY FEW NICKELS. I HAVE FOUND 1 SILVER DIME AT A OLD HOUSE. DEEPEST COINS HAVE BEEN 8 INCHES,BUT DUG SMASHED CANS AT LEAST 15 INCHES.( DON'T YOU HATE THAT??!)

I KNOW THIS SOUNDS LIKE A DETECTOR REVIEW. I WONDER FROM SOME OF YOU WITH ALOT OF EXPERIENCE, COULD TELL ME IF I'M GETTING WHAT I SHOULD FROM THIS DETECTOR. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENTS AND ADVICE!!
THANKS ,JIM

Sounds about right Jim. When I had the 30, although it didn't like waves crashing over the coil, it seemed to be stable most of the time on wet sand.
Coke cans are pretty easy to figure out. If you suspect the target is deeper than your depth meter is showing, lift your coil to see how long the signal hangs on for. A coin is good for 6 inches.

HI! I HOPE I GET A LOT OF COMMENTS AND ADVICE ON MY 305 QUESTION. I WELCOME THEM ALL.
I'M LOCATED IN NORTH CENTRAL KENTUCKY. BRANDENBURG,WEST OF FORT KNOX AND SOUTH WEST OF LOUISVILLE. LETS GET TOGETHER. I'M RETIRED AND CAN HUNT ABOUT ANYTIME.:wiggle:

I live about thirty minutes south of elizabethtown.

Sounds like you're doing well with your 305. If you make it back down to TX next winter, try hunting the dry sand separate from the wet sand so you don't have to continually ground balance. (that is one benefit of having tracking on the 705). GB for the particular sand you are in. And you may want to lower your sensitivity on the wet sand. As to the lack of nickels...... who knows? If you're digging the 8's and 12's, you should be getting most of them. Keep in mind that most nickels hang around the 12 range. You are able to get those with less conductivity by accepting the 8 notch. But you have rejected the 16 notch, to avoid some junk. The variance of 12 to 16 is the same "distance" as from 12 to 8. So you might be missing some nickels due to 16 being rejected. Along with some smaller gold rings. Just a matter of trade-offs when you discriminate out target notches. JMHO HH Randy

I too was not digging 12 signals that bounced around from 8 to 16 figuring these were junk or pulltabs. Dug some today that jumped from 10 to 18 and pulled 3 nickels expecting them to be junk. You won't know 'til you dig them.

Thanks guys, for the ideas and comments. Please keep this going,as i feel we can all learn a lot!! From a minelab site video,i have learned that if the numbers jump more than 2 numbers(like 27,32 36) ,most likely this i is not a coin. I have found this to be true. Usually a 8-12 reading is foil or small aluminum. To possibly be missing gold rings, i will start digging these numbers too. I feel the xterra 305 is a great detector. Love to hear from other 305 owners!!

There is quite a bit of information on the FAQFAQ section near the top of these posts. And if you have specific questions, don't forget about the "SEARCH" option on the forum. In addition, you should be able to pick up some tips from the eBook "Understanding your X-TERRA". It is FREE and can be found on Minelab's website. The link to access the book can be found in the sticky at the top of these posts. HH Randy
