XLT Control Box

Just wondering if anyone has experienced there control box becoming loose and if so what's the fix? I took the screws out the other day and thought maybe there was a couple of screws that ran through the top of the box into the upper arm, but it looked as though there was a rivet or something that connects it to the arm. Any information would be appreciated.

the control box stays in place just like the the sections of the rod does. It has the things that stick out of the hole when put together. If you look at the rod you will see what I mean. The box is made to come off the rod so it can be hip mounted if you like. Hope this helps .

aluminum rivets to attach the control housing to the rod. It was not all that uncommon to have a housing get loose. This was corrected by going to steel rivets. Through the years I have only encountered two (2) of the models assembled with steel rivets that were loose and they were both specimens that saw a lot of hard (and rough) use (abuse).

I'm almost sure mine is aluminum since I bought my XLT when they first came out, I took the end cap off of the upper rod last night after reading the post of centisteve to try to see what he was talking about the hip mount for the XLT. It looks like one rivet or something, can you take the control box off the XLT and hip mount it? I wouldn't want to hip mount, just looking to see if there is a way to fix it. It's not real bad now and Ive always taken good care of my metal detector's, I have another XLT for backup and the box on it is solid as a rock. If I want this fixed is this something I probably should talk to White's about? Thanks J.W.

I had this problem develop on a slim line model. It is pretty easy to fix yourself. If you go to Lowe's or similar, you can buy a rivet kit. Make sure they are steel rivets. Disassemble the control box and drill the old rivets out. I used a couple of stainless steel washers on the inside of the tube as well. This is intended to prevent the holes in the aluminum tube from galling and getting loose again. Once the top plate of the control box is firmly riveted to the tube apply a liberal amount of silicon or RTV to the rivets to help prevent water intrusion.
