XLT screen problem

I have an XLT that I use for a back-up or loaner detector. The last time it was used the screen would was blank for several seconds. When it finally came on it was very weak. The detector worked fine but the display kept fading in amd out.
I called Whitre's 800 number and got a distributor in Florida. They said they also did repairs. I was told that the LCD(?) screen was probably going out and would have to be replaced.
Would you send the machine to a repair shop or would you return it to White's in Oregon? I think I would feel better sending it back to the manufacturer.

Do the repair centers charge the same as the factory? I called the home office and was told the cost would never exceed $120.00. No matter what they had to do.
