XP DEUS CONTROLLERS

I m new to the XP Deus, I have the w4 set up with grey ghost headphones, my battery went dead on the headphone controller while detecting on the beach, my fault, I'm wondering why I couldn't get audio on the main unit controller with the coil attached ? Does the head phone controller need to be away from the main controller to work properly ? Any help would be appreciated

wouldn't you have to go into settings on the controller and select speaker since the headphones were dead?

Or just turn off the controller and then turn it back on. That should be the first thing it ask "speaker"-- "yes or no".
