xs question?

ohio fred

Well-known member
usually i run a xlt mxt idx fisher and a Garrett. But i wanted to try a mine lab so i bought a used xs,not quite sure how to use it but iam working with it the weather is bad so i go out in the yard for about 15 min at a time.Have it on deep smart screen i pushed the iron mask to o and went in advance mode and x out foil nails bottle caps left coin and jewelry in in conductive mode i believe would have to check it again did this so i would just pick up coins, so if iam going real slow and get a ping is it iron down 6 7 inches or would it be a coin on edge? If smart screen jumps hi right and then middle half in iron and back is this usually junk? Kind of cold to dig unless iam really sure.I downloaded a emulator from the web explorer 2 so i could try things on computer i do not get a ferrous number on xs but i do get a conductive number on xs i also downloaded a vid chart for ex 2 does any on have a junk number chart for xs? Did get fooled into digging a 5,6 number thought it might be a nickel it was a piece of foil round about size of nickle,so that was my first find. Thanks for the help

Fred,

You should run the noise cancel before you start hunting. You don't mention your sensitivity setting, but it you have it maxed out, that may not be the best place to start. Just bench testing the machine on coins will show you that they most always fall in the upper right of the smart screen, except the nickel. A good coin target will be repeatable from all directions. A coin next to junk can vary the screen placement.

Naturally jewelry can fall anywhere on the right side of the screen.

coil 1000 0r 1050,manual sensitivity 22-25, alll metall _14 -13, gain 10, audio 1, variability 10, conductive,, smart screen, deep ,fast off. simply look smart screen and dig all targets up from foil. any pinpoint.noise cancel depends from situation -but if you like you can push all the time when you star.

sensitivity from 16 to 28 i have been running the noise cancellation,i did find something a little while ago a piece of copper cut off about 3 inches long and about 8 inches down trying to work on coins in the yard that i might have missed or down deep. Thanks for the information have to keep running out for a few minutes at a time the weather is cold might get into 40,s thur fri so i might have a chance to run to a school yard or a least stay out for a while. Thanks again

Well thanks it will take me a while to figure out what you just told me only had this machine about a week starting to under stand it a little was trying to eliminate all possibilities of junk just to understand what a coin sound like i did dig a copper pipe cut off about 3 inches long down about 8 inches today kept showing up hi right and the bounce to the left couldn't get a good lock on it but sounded close to a coin sound and i have to learn where this machine pinpoints at other wise i have to bring one of my other detectors out to pinpoint the spot thanks for information suppose to get into 40,s thur or fri i may have a better chance of staying out longer than 15 minutes. Thanks again for information

OF to use other detector for pinpoint is possibility, but its to much weight and can be to much noise on both detectors. I personally never-ever use pinpoint o my xs and can be others dont too, because on early explorers except SE pinpoint can be tragic, but I dont see any minuses to pinpoint with swinging coil and looking what size object is. my suggestion for starters to use big shovel and dig in one plough, but possibly no one will understand you if you will do this in park  to check how deep target you can lift coil and look when target disapear. if you new with explorer no point to use much manual sensitivity 22-25 its very much ok. if on you xs original coil, lower it down and scratch surface with it, it absolutely no problem. good luck Stasys

If you see the sensitivity number with lines moving around it, you are in the auto sensitivity mode. To switch to manual, press the pad next to the sensitivity number one time....the lines should disappear. You can do this while the machine is in the smart screen, you do not have to go into the menu for it.

Regarding pinpointing, quite often I will pinpoint in the regular search mode. It is necessary to do this from two directions 90 degrees apart to pinpoint with the DD coil

If you do not have the manual, I would definitely visit the Minelab site and download one. It will help

thanks yes i have the manual and it is pretty good, just some small thing it didn't explain or i missed it when i was reading,i had a book on its way xs by andy sabisch but thought it would be here by now don't know if it got lost in mail have to see .Thanks again
