XS.... smart or digital ?

Eric

New member
I am an XS user since a week and I am getting the hang of it now. One thing I still find hard to learn is the smart mode. I tried it several times but keep coming back to digital and use the numbers. I know when they read to high, I won't dig.

How many people are using digital and does smart has an advantage over digital?

Thanks, Eric.

I use digital and I don't ever plan on going to smart. That's just me. I think it's a personal preference really.

First off, you need to listen to the sounds, THAT is #1!! The screen might help, but it also hurts you as well. Numbers are nice, but not good when you have a nail or a piece of junk in the ground!! At least if you HEAR something that makes you stop and listen again, then check the smart screen you can see what it does, how it jumps, where it hits on the screen. Deep targets seem to "lie" and if you go by sound and just use the screen to check(and besides you paid for this feature) where it hits you'll have better luck. Screen is a personal choice, the sounds are more important, good luck!!

To be honest with everyone all SMART screen is is a different way of expressing digital numbers, nothing smart about it, just a marketing gimmick from :minelab:

weather you are using smart or digital the numbers all correlate to the same value or fluctuation. Just a matter of personal preference.

I always run with the digital screen but never dig until I switch over to the smart screen before I dig..Just can't stand that bouncing peep site. We all know nothing is perfect but using both along with the tone gives me a pretty good idea of what I am going for..Many use the smart screen so all a matter of preference and what you get used to...

I always hunt in smartfind because it shows the same information you see in digital mode on the vertical axis (the conductivity of the object) but it also shows you the ferrous content of the target on the horizontal axis. So the farther to the left the target cursor is the more iron is in the target while the higher the target cursor is from the bottom the more conductive it is to the radio waves the detector sends out.

Most detectors only show the conductivity of the target the explorer is unique in that it can also show you the ferrous content at the same time. Most of those detectors show a VDI type number that often goes up to 100. The explorer has 32 steps on the conductivity so not as many as most other machines, but it also shows 32 steps on ferrous axis so when you combine those two together you get (32x32) or 1024 possible target IDs.

The digital display does use the ferrous reading as well as the conductivity to choose which icon to display but that isn't as precise as seeing the ferrous display in smartfind.

One of the upgrades they did for the explorer 2 is that they show both the conductivity and ferrous numbers on digital (at least so I've read as I am still using my old reliable XS)

I have been an user of the XS since December 2000, would not even think of using the digital screen, losing valuable information that is available to you in the Smart Screen. Does not make sense to not take full advantage of the Smart Screen over digital. The information between tone and the visual is very accurate on my detector. Digital numbers may be fine once the Ferrous and Non Ferrous numbers showed on the Explorer II, but even if I had that I would still use Smart Screen. Could care less about E-trac prep. LOL.

I have to use digital numbers on my Fisher Excel ID and do not care for it at all.

I tried switching back a forth a few times at first, but decided to stick with smart screen, and multi tones, and that works for me. It shows me a "resolution" of the target by combining all of the ID functions on the fly. Use what you feel most comfortable with, it is a matter of personal preference. When you feel like you have found the display mode you like, learn it , it will serve you well....HH LaDigger

I Love my EX II !

One of the guys I hunt with kicks bu!! using digital while one likes smartfind. I\ve learned from hunting with these guys that hunting by sound is the main thing anyway.

well if you think about it there are only 32 numbers in digital but there are a 100's of spots in smart the smart screen is more accurate than the 32 numbers!!!!!

I guess I will give the smart mode a serious go starting tomorrow. Most people seem to use the smart mode. Thanks for all your replies.

Eric.

AND when you think about both FE and conduct # the COMBINATIONS are in the hundreds too, no difference, it's just personal preference.

XS digital is not both ferrous and non-ferrous readout! That started with XSII.......... :)

To use digital on the original XS is to deprive yourself of the advantage of more information about the target that the Smart Screen give you.

Heres a tip make all your setting in advanced if you wish to use that mode and then go back and change advanced to quickstart and will hold all your setting plus give you the advantage of just switching back and forth..Accurate info from Minelab...and knowledgeable Explorer users..
