XT-70 coil to hunt a school yard

I just a 6" DD HF coil for my XT-70 and took it in the back yard. Seems to be a great coil, but its going to be brutal covering any area with this. Tomorrow, I'm going to an early school yard (founded early 1900s) that is still in use. Would I be better off starting with my stock coil, then use the small coil in areas where I've found a coin or two? I'm a relic hunter, but the season hasn't really started in earnest yet and I figure coin hunting might be a good way to get familiar with the XT-70.
 
I would start with the stock coil. For sure can cover more ground a bit quicker. Save the 6" for the trashy areas and you will be fine. Good luck to you, Beale.
 
If you overlap your stock coil by 50% and your 6 inch DD by 20% (since it's a DD coil) there's not too much difference in ground coverage. I know it seems like it though.
 
Use the small coil for the more trashy areas and yes, this should help you out once you start relic hunting.

When your standing in the middle of a paddock waving your little 6" coil around it can be quite daunting. Stock coil all the way for sure. I get better success with the stock in schools then I do with the 6" coil mainly because of sweep and coil size. Alot of people under estimate the stock coil but I think its a beauty on coins. I only wish there was a bigger coil to cover large flat areas. I do miss my Exp II for this very reason because unlike the X-Terra's the Explorers can utilize larger coils from other manufacturers.

Yep, my experience today hunting a school yard and a recreation area with the stock coil bears out your advice in spades. I'm realizing that the small coil is a very specialized coil that I will only strap on after establishing an area as having possible targets, but too trashy for the stock coil. Also, I don't expect to be able to cover a very large area at a time, when I do.
