Xt70 and 6 in 18.75kHz and sub gram gold

New member
Hi all
minelab claims that the 6 inch 18.75kHz Coil works on the Xt70 for sub gram gold nuggets
has anybody tested the 6in coil on gold with that size nugget
in the ground or on the bench ?

point of the question is , is the 6in coil worth getting to even try for sub gram gold in the gold fields. ?
any reply appreciated.
thanks

I have bench tested the XT-70 using a 6" DD HF coil on sub-gram gold that I had bought and it will easily hit on it in the prospecting mode. Several past forum members have posted pictures of sub-gram gold that they had found while using the XT-70 with the 6" DD HF coil and some particles of gold were down to the size of the flame on the top of the torch which is on the back of a dime. That is some mighty small gold for a detector which isn't even a dedicated gold detector.

Thats one small piece of gold
do you recall how deep it was ?

and just to be clear we are talking about this flame, yes

The gold that size can be seen on Digger's post shown above under "search of 6" DD nuggets" and the very first post listed under it, then click on it and the 7th post down shows how small of gold (in relationship to a dime) that was found using the XT-70 with a 6" DD HF coil. I don't know how deep the sub gram pieces were found at, but would bet they were quite shallow because of being that small. Also Hoover's post of April 25, 2009 and Neilo's posts of June 16, 2010 show pictures of similar sub-gram gold (in relationship to a dime) found using the XT 6" DD HF coil. Hopes this helps...

The 6" DD HF (18.76khz) coil is a formidable tool if you can take some time to get to understand it.

It is VERY sensitive so in places where mineralization and small pieces of ironstone are present, you may need to turn DOWN the sensitivity.
The smallest pieces of metal it can respond to may be very small... just a few millimeters across.

i once detected the corroded core of a sewing needle in a goldfield under 4 inches of soil, in a crevice, under about 5 inches of water. The outer part of the needle had fallen away over time and the core was so fine that it was curling over like a hair towards the end with the tip. The only thing that identified it for me was that the eye was still intact.

I'm using a GPX-5000 at the moment and I won't part my my X-Terra with 6" HF DD coil... if you are a prospector, you will find it useful.

Note also that it is waterproof and was designed to be submerged.
