I seem to remember some time ago a post about modifying the environmental cover for the Xterra 70. I'm really tired of having to pry the cover off to change batteries and mangling the headphone jack compartment cover and the battery compartment cover. I could probably figure out something on my own but the one I saw was really neat & tidy. Can anyone help ?

I know exactly what your saying and it drive me insane. Check e-bay as I have seen an after market dust cover which has a Velcro strap so you can open the battery compartment. There was a post on here not long ago with the name of an e-bay seller who sells them. I took the cheap round and cut a hole in the cover where the battery compartment door is located. Hope this helps.
The original cover is the best thing there is as it protects the batterycompartment best from water.
What you can do to make it easier to remove for battery change is to cut the cover in two on the part that is below the hole for the coil cable. Then You will be able to remove the cover easily without disconnect the coil cable. You might want to sew on some burr lock fasteners there as well.
That way it will be very easy to remove and no protection from water has been compromized.

Digger and I hunt together quite often 
and he altered his by removing the material where the battery compartment is located and installed a piece of black velcro in place of the removed material. Seemed to be just the ticket!! Easy mod. Maybe he will comment on how he likes it.

Here's one that I made from scratch and it works great.
You still have to remove it to replace the batteries, but it is much easier than the factory cover.
I also made a V cut on the back so I don't have to disconnect the coil connection each time to remove the cover.
