Xterra 705

I am thinking about getting the Minelab Xterra 705. I want to hunt dry sand at the beach, relic hunt in central Virginia, and hunts for coins and jewelry inland. Is this a good choice? I currently have a Minelab Excalibur II and I am very pleased with that at the beach or in water. I was also considering the CTX 3030, but for the money that I would lay out for that, I could get at least two high quality detectors. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Happy Hunting!

The Xterra 705 will be a good land machine to complement your Excal. You won't regret getting one. Fairly fast, pretty deep and with the 10.5" DD coil it is deep. It is a quiet, stable, and well made detector.

Yes it is a good choice and you wont have to detect as slow as the Excalibur either .
Check my finds rate below , it is all off a shingle (stoney) beach in the UK. though beaches are not always like this and even this one has its quiet moments.

The Terra is best for airy sites , fresh plough and stony beaches but dry sand is fine. Anything with air in the mix. The hard the ground then i am not so sure ? but the ET or CTX are the opposite , they dont like air in the mix. Harder the better for them. Good luck.

You will not believe how light an xterra 705 is to swing even with the 10.5 coil on it. It is really easy to use and there is a lot of support on this forum.

Joe,

After looking at every detector from $1200 down, I felt the 705 was the best choice for me and I just bought one. That's all I can tell you as I have no expereince with it yet. I was looking for a detector light enough I could swing all day that offered good depth and had the ability to customize a bit if I so desire. The 705 fit those requirements better than any other I could find.

BTW, in hunting the dry sand at the beach (I live an hour from the Atlantic Ocean), one guy advised me to hunt in prospecting mode. He said the depth I'll get is unbelievable.

Good choice i think. Never used the prospecting mode but never needed to , will try it one day but not sure if it gives very much target info.

I chose it after owning a 70 series for two and a half years. It is a very good MD for the money and will hunt with unint costing more money, IMHO, Beale.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I still have not made my decision. But the info you have provided is great! Thanks!

A pretty well designed unit without too much fancy stuff.
You can cater it to your needs at hand with just a simple coil switch.

Prospecting mode is great around iron, you can sniff out a non ferrous target, switch to a disc pattern and get a TID.
Shaft is one of the best around, very stable and comfortable.
Actually switched my Excal to an X-terra shaft, got the Excal hip mounted.

Only pain is the headphone plug location, but that can be cheaply remedied.

Go for the Xterra705!

Supernice detector, will never sell mine. Have found so much good stuff with it.
Works really good on the ground Nuke em told you.

But for pasture, park and wet beach why not the CTX3030, really nice to swing,in my opinion easier then Xterra and 10.5 coil.CTX is a good balanced detector but a bit pricy.
