Xterra flight: Carry on or checked baggage?

I am flying cross country in June. Should I pack the 705 and the Carrot in the carry on or in the checked baggage? The digger will be in the checked baggage for sure. Is there any problem putting the digger in checked baggage? Is the luggage cargo hold climate controlled? Thanks for any help.
 
The last time I took a detector on a flight it went with me. I wouldn't trust baggage handlers to treat it with respect.
 
I put the rod and coil in my checked baggage, and took the control box with me in a small carry on bag. Worked well for me.
