Xterra's enviromental cover. The good and the bad. :ranting:

I know what you mean. I "modified" mine a few months ago, and posted a pic on here. What I did was cut out a rectangular section of the cover surrounding the battery door, and "hot glued" on some velcro to the edges. Then I hot glued some more velcro to the perimeter of the hole I made, and simply remove the patch when I want to change batteries. It ain't the neatest workmanship! But it serves the purpose just fine. HH Randy
 
Although I love to tinker on my detectors I bit the bullet. I went and ordered one and the total at todays exchange rate was $40.10 US dollars shipped. I said I would pay like $30.00 but thought I could sell my old cover for like $10.00 shipped. That's how I justified my purchase.
 
Mine fits tight like a glove and a booger to get off.
 
I modified mine. Just cut down the side oppisite the headphone jack opening. Take denim patch or any other rugged material and sew (if you do) a piece on top and bottom of the gap you cut. Leave about a 3/8 in gap. If you don't sew you can try some of the seam wizard stuff where you iron on the glue between two fabrics. Anyway, works just fine this way with easy off-easy on.

My X-70 came in yesterday. Regretfully I cannot use it for a few days.

One of the items ordered was the environmental cover. I first tried the fit of the factory cover and agree
there is allot to be improved upon. The fit is nice and tight and the battery and coil wire access hole are perfect.
The clear plastic window is too thick. I believe that is what causes the wrinkles and makes the buttons hard to use.

Then I tried the quart size Zip-Loc freezer bag as mentioned and I'm rather impressed. So much
so, that I doubt I'll use the factory cover. Probably just the Zip-Loc.

Those who can access Costco will find they sell the quart and the gallon bags (also handy) in a case lots.
I keep a box of them in my camping/prospecting gear and use them frequently. This is great
to have another usage - - Thanks!

One of the Stand-up comics on Comic Central (TV) had a joke about Costco; Don't recall how it went exactly, but
it had to do with how hard it is for a single person to shop at Costco. Hard to make decisions on what to buy, because
the quantity will likely last more than one person's lifetime. I did not hear that joke untill after I had bought Q-tips at
Costco a couple years back. I think I still have 3 or maybe 4 thousand left. I'll put them in my will!
 
I fit it on an it's nice. It's not a Minelab cover. It has a velcro cover to the batteries and two velcro straps that pull the cover down while closing up the bottom. It also had a flap to help keep water off of the coil connection. I'll post some pictures in a few days after I give it a work out.
 
How did you order it? I started looking on the net and all I could find was that you could contact them through Tnet.
 
I found the item from the same manufacturer listed on ebay. I contacted the seller and they provided the cost and shipping information. At nearly $50 US, I decided to continue using the Minelab version that I have modified. HH Randy
 
I just pull mine down to the plug on the back. I never unplug mine unless I am changing coils.
One word of caution, when you do pull the cover off or put it on be careful that you put the earphone cover on and all the way and seated in or it can be riped off by the cover.

They have velcro straps that go under on each side for snug fit and a velcro-fastened flap over the battery compartment. They even have a small flap over the hole for the cable connector to prevent any drizzle to sneak in that way. I use it myself and am extremely happy with it. When on, it can basically be left there indefinitely (I only remove about once a month to clean out any dirt that has found its way inside).
