Yellow Excalibur headphone modification

I've got the female and male components of an Ikelite plug so I can modify my Excalibur headphone set-up. Putting the female plug on the detector seems pretty easy. Just cut the black and red wires with the little white plug that connects to the main board and then solder the corresponding wire colors from the little white plug to the female Ikelite plug. Somone let me know if that's right. I haven't cut the headphone wire yet but I'm told that there are more than just red and black wires in the headphone cable. If that's true, which 2 wires do I connect to the male Ikelite plug?

Doc you have a picture of your lay out..like this? And is it a Xcal II or older

I don't have anything layed out like that yet. I've figured out how to connect the female Ikelite plug to the control tube. I've got an Excalibur 1000 but I bought it used and it has the yellow Koss headphones from an Excalibur II hardwired to it. I just need to know how many wires there are in my headphone cable. Are there more than 2 wires in it or is there just black and red wires that will match up to those on the female Ikelite plug? If there are more than 2 inside the heaphone cable then I need to know which ones to connect to the male Ikelite plug since it only has 2 posts to hold wires. I don't want to cut any cables until I'm sure of what I've got to work with.

OK. So there are 4 wires. Red with white and yellow with black. So the red and white go into one post on the male Ikelite plug and the yellow and black go into the other post?

Yes, but you said you had Xcal II head phones so there maybe only 2 wires...once you cut it let us know, never cut into them before...on the originals yellows there is 4 wires, 2 small and 2 lg.....

I think I've got the headphones like the ones in the second picture you posted but we'll see what it looks like in there when I cut it and I'll let you know. Thanks for your help.

Doc, WELCOME HOME!! Now incase you didn't know it, it sounds like you got one of the LAST MANUFACTURED Excal-1000 w/
Yellow KOSS Headphones!! MINELAB only manufactured that unit for approx. 6 mons. before coming out with the current EXCAL-II
Detector!! Yours is a NORTHERN IRELAND Unit, so you got a GOOD ONE in my opinion!! BEST of LUCK, Les Robinson

Thanks Les. I was thinking the same thing when I got it in the mail and wished that were the case but a few things gave it away making me think it was modified. 1. It has the yellow headphones. 2. It has a slim 10" coil with the yellow/green decal on it that says Excalibur II. Either way I'll start the modification tonight or tomorrow and see what I've got to work with.
