Years ago My then partner and I were diggin and I looked over and saw my partner run a few feet and fall to the ground. I thought he was having a big one but he yelled "Don't come near here... there are ground wasps" Coming from Texas I had never seen one of these creatures. All we had to deal with were snakes and giant red ants. My partner later told me that by falling to the ground they just flew over him. You can also hug a large tree trunk to get away also.
