Yesterday I hunted some fields in my area and found some buttons, one had an anchor and chain on it. It's a flat button about the size of a quarter, If anyone knows its history let me know please. Today Andy and myself hunted a couple of fields in his area and we both found some interesting items. Andy found a nice 1914 Barber dime, flat buttons and other misc. items (no picture)..My take for the day was good in that I found a nice Spanish coin (cut piece), flat buttons, old key, buckles and bullets..As usual we had a good time hunting and will probably hit the dirt again later this week...

There looks o be twenty one links to the chain attatched to the anchor. I've been looking through tice's and several other button books and the only one I can find that's close is a 1830's naval one peice button there are marked and unmarked varieties. If you get a lot of malitia buttons you should get a copy of Uniform buttons of the united states 1776-1865 By Warren K. Tice. Most of my dug buttons that I previosly could not identify were in this book. It also has a wealth of information on early types and backmarks. Verry good finds!

Thanks a lot for the information you have posted.........I do have a button book, it doesn't show this particular button..I will look into purchasing the book you have mentioned.
