Yesterday's diggin' and bunny pettin' adventure!

Good afternoon, managed to get out again yesterday with my buddy to the campground we discovered last weekend. We started making our way up to the main camp / field and my buddy finds an 1873 seated dime walking on the path. I also had a sweet hit on my XLT on the other side of the path about 20 feet behind him. Dug and dug thru the hard compact dirt and gravel only to be rewarded with a 1973 memorial... We made our way up to the field and my buddy scored another boyscout slide and I scored a number of pulltabs. My buddy finds 2 wheats and I find my batteries getting low on my machine. I stuck it out for another 30 minutes like that, lowering the sensitivity and gain in hopes of getting a little more time out of the batteries. It worked, but I was stuck digging only shallow signals. After 30 minutes I see the screen disappearing and the machine acting erratic. The batteries were now toast. My buddy continued to hunt while I stuck out like a sore thumb. He then called me over, now i'm thinking he finds another silver, but this was better than any silver coin.

He called me over and pointed out this little baby rabbit hidden in the tall grass. That thing wouldn't move. It looked wicked scared. I then proceeded to pet the fury critter and then I felt all the frustrations I was having leave my body. I felt calm and collected from that point on. I will admit, while I was petting the rabbit, I had visions of the mother jumping out of the nearby woods and gnawing my hands like that rabbit in the movie "Monty Python and the Quest for the Holy Grail" lol

We then left, went to the nearest gas station, my buddy pulls in, I look at the store front and I said, thats' not a real gas station, that right there is a real gas station (pointing to Cumberland farms right next door) I said if any place has batteries, they do! Walked in, got 8AA batteries and a 12oz pepsi and it cost me $13.77 Drats!!! And they were cheap batteries to begin with.... Went back to the camp ground. Wandered off on a path neither of us hit yet. Found a junk ring laying on the ground. Said this is a good sign. Walked into this clearing where I see one lonely tree stump. Did the walk around the stump and got a nice quarter signal and damn was it loud. The depth was about 2 inches and the VDI was a constant 87. Usually from experience this is a clad quarter, but as I increased the sweep speed over the target, #88 was on the screen a good portion of the time. Usually a silver quarter. Dug down, popped the plug and the quarter jumped out. It looked nice and shiney. Picked it up and it was a nice 1951 silver quarter! At that point, it was nearly dark and I heard the "whistle" which means its time to get going. Met up with my buddy in the field, showed him the quarter and he proceeded to tell me he found a 1945 mercury dime lying on top of the ground in the woods. After a fist pound and a congrats to ourselves, we left. I can tell this campground is gonna be a great honey hole. Its a huge area. Just wish the finds were more concentrated in areas instead of few and far between. I also wish I would get on the board early in the hunt, instead of right at the end of the hunts...

HH!

way too cool of a day Eric. thats what makes the adventure worth while. thanks for sharing hh

Great story Eric. We can all relate. Sometimes you hit a great find right off the bat then . . .nothing. Sometimes you hunt for hours with no luck and are just about ready to pack it up and then the find of the day appears ! You gotta love the hunt . . .
