Yesterday was a wonderful break in the sweltering heat we've been suffering through for 3 weeks. The storms rolled through the night before and cooled it off nicely. 85 degrees and dry northern air sure felt like heaven compared 100 degree heat and high humidity
My 2 1/2 year old son wore his mother out over the past week, so I promised to get him out of her hair for the day... we headed out to do some detecting. He uses a wheeled walker to get around due to his weak legs, but he does fine and he shows great interest in what Dad is digging up... He still has to learn that his aluminum walker doesn't help my detector any when he's within 3 feet of me, but oh well! He's a blast to have along. I gave him his own digger to help me out and he really enjoys it. He learned how to flip the plug back over in the hole and stomp it down too!
When I find something in the hole I tell him I found "money" and he responds by stabbing his digger into the hole - so I have to be careful when there is a silver coin in there.
Anyway, we went to the local park where the Seminar/Hunt is taking place next month, and I decide to try a couple of spots that were recently mowed and I did good at years ago. There isn't many good hits left, so I concentrated on the low deep hits and starting finding the usual bits of small junk, bullets, and the occasional V Nickel thrown in. I get a deep iffy silver hit, but in this dry clay-based ground it could be iron or anything, but when I cut the plug and probed the hole the detector sang out loud on a silver coin! I was happy because most of the coins I dug in this spot were seated liberties... but this time it was a 1907O barber dime in great shape.
I got a lousy low hit about 6" over from the hole when I rechecked it - it bounced around nickel and had a high hit to it. It sounded shallower than the barber dime I just dug so I thought it would be a rotted pulltab. When I dug I found the probe locking onto a definite nickel hit deep in the hole, but it also locked onto a high silver hit on one side of it.
I dug out the nickel hit and it was a 1901 V Nickel, and the silver hit was still there under it, so i know I have at least a barber dime in the hole before I dig it! It was a 1904, not in as good of shape as the first one, but a definite keeper. I like finding multiple coins like this because you can see the approximate wear that a barber dime goes through in 3 years of circulation. I hunted a little more and added another V Nickel to the day's take and decided to call it a day.
My son kept hearing the light rail train running through the park and told me he wanted to ride the train. He never rode on one before so we knocked off and went to ride it for an hour, he had a blast!

I marked a couple more hits for the seminar weekend, there should be a nice array of signals to try out for you guys showing up. I still have a couple other parks to mark signals in, so I have a lot of work to do in the next month. Take a moment to visit the Seminar forum and check out the updates if you haven't done so recently. We are still getting some registrations trickling in, but we have room for many more! 50 dollars will get you a lot of fun and instruction, so please consider joining us! Take care and HH, Mike.
