I still don't.

Forget the frickin' Walker.

In process now,,,taking pis,,,will post some tonight. But they're flash (with tissue taped over the flash lens so I can take close-ups) but the best light by far I have is morning light so I'll take better pics in the morning. Those will be cleaned more by then too. But I'm being ****ed careful.

I'm not going to be able to retire and buy the Lear jet I'd like but I suspect I will never have as wonderful an evening metal detecting as I did tonight.

This is really unbelievable...

Okay. I'm kind of buzzed by now celebrating. But that makes it hard to figure out how I want to play this (stringing it along adequately to buil d up the suspense it deserves). . i'd like to build it nicely but I'm no t sure how well I'll be able to do that. But, given that intro, I should leave something up before i crash.

I have a tentative ID on one, a positive ID (though not any variations that may exist) on the other one--(and that's the current unbelievable gem of the lot!), but have no idea what the rest are yet.

...I can at least give the intro t the situation. (Pardon me if it's less clear o typo-laden than it might be--I stopped and bought some tequila on the way home (Lagavulin is $70 a bottle now!!!!!!!), so I'm a bit fuzzy.) So here goes (please excuse any incoherence (and my keyboard's tsticky latelyl too))...

I've been hunting this one site on and off for a couple of years. I've never hit anything particular fantastic at it--though some nice stuff--but something about it kept me coming back. There's an OLD oak(?) tree in the middle of the lot (I'll have to get a picture of it), and the location shows up on 1700s maps, though never with anything located on it. Just the blank spot between roads and houses. But, a week or so ago, I hit anIndian Head on it and my oldest Merc, a '23, so I knew there were still goodies there. A couple days later, I hit it again and found another Indian. Then 2 nights ago I hit it and didn't find anything but an old, or semi-old, button and a 1919-S wheat. Now I've never seen anyone else on that site but dog-poopers but I talked with a woman at work about it after I'd found the Indian and Merc and she said her club--the main one in the Boston area--had hit it at least once. So, when I was there last night--and not finding much--I glanced across the road and thought, "hmmmm..., I never thought abut that spot before. I wonder if there's anything interesting there." "Maybe no one else has hit it much." (Which I suspect turns out to be the case.) After leaving work tongiht I was going to hit another sot but drove past and parked nearby and walked around the corner to see what I thought. There was actually a part of that park I'd never even noticed before, and I've driven by it hundreds of times! Okay, I figured, if I hadn't noticed that, the odds are good that it hasn't been hit too hard. So I went back to the Jeep and geared up. Walked to the unknown part and hit nothing but trash and then a modern spill wi/ two cents, two quarters, and then a dime, all right on the surface. Worked my way along further and dug a signal that turned out to be #$*#$% and then kept going to the part of the park that I'd at least seen before, when I used to live out along that road. Hunted along the edge, and then towards the middle for about an hour with nothing to show for it but a couple of clad dimes and memorials. :detecting: It was staring to get dark then. It was staring to look like this about then:

(phto taken a little later but lightened to match what it looked like then)
(and that might be the old oak(?) I mentioned showing across the strete)

About then, I got a signal that was bouncing around between the top left of the screen but seemed to be stuck a bit on the 24 conductive level, though i t was bouncing a lot on the ferrous (horizontal) axis. But it seemd to be doing that pretty consistently. Was reading about halfway down on the depth meter. After some failed iffy readings earlier--including some disappearing signals that wer epobably hot rocks--I wasn't too confident but I was thinking "Indian" at that point since the VFO seemed to be locking on to i pretty well. Cut the plug, dug down, and was VERY pleasantly surprised. I was so surprised, I didn't think to take a pic. Cleaned it up slightly with some spit and a toothbrush and thought I had a early 1800s Classic Head large cent. (Didn't find out until I got home that it wasn't.) :D

But I was quite excited at that thought and, after checking the hole, poured the dirt back in, flipped the plug back, and started spiralling around that spot. After a few minutes, about 18 inches away, I got a similar signal. Oh yeah! Cut the plug, pulled out some dirt, and again about 6" down, found me a wonderful piece of copper. Did the ol' spit and toothbrush bit and saw something I couldn't quite believe. "That really can't be a ****ing _____, can it?" Whether it was or wasn't, I was already feeling "detecting can't get much better than this."

And I'm going to leave it at that for the moment and go to bed.

But here's the raw pic of the 2nd one at 9:12 this evening. In the soil off the end of the trowel against the plastic:

And in the hand:

Answer: Yes, it was a ****ing _____!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :surprised:

And, while that may be the most rare one, since I don't know what the last ___ are yet, I'm still not sure.

But, given what that one coin is, I'll be lucky to ever top it, no matter how long I end up detecting.

Needless to say (even if I'm leaving what it is unknown yet until I get a better picture (and have the energy to finish typing this), that I'm quite happy. (If quite tired by now.)

I might not end up getting that much typed up in the morning (I'm ADD and slow) since I'm going to either hit the same spot again in the morning on the way to work or try to leave early enough to have time to hit it on the way home before I pick up my kids. But I'll try to get some good photos in the morning if I can and not leave too much hanging...

By now, it's looking like this out:

[attachment 95337 080618-2312_4x_traffic_8130_sm.JPG]

I tucked the 2nd large copper away between the cotton and, like all good little detectorists, ran the probe back in the hole. SING! off to the upper right and deeper. Another one in the same hole? :yikes: A colonial pocket spill? Dig, dig, dig. As I got carefully got closer the readings were starting to look like possibly silver but, after a brief bit of extra excitement, large copper #3 was in the loose dirt in the bottom of the hole.

Stashed that baby away and checked the hole again. Nothing. Cleaned everything up, stood up and continued detecting. :detecting: A short distance away--between the excitement, the darkness, and spiraling around I was getting a bit confused at this point--probably about two feet opposite on the other side of the first hole I started getting a nice tone with similar cursor bouncings as the first three. Cut another plug and, a bit deeper than the others, I think, up popped large copper #4. (A bit of brushing away with fingertips for the photo.)

All four of these were within about 15-20 minutes time. (From the picture of the 2nd to the picture of the last was 13m.) As far as I could tell in my confused state, all 3 holes were within a circle of about 5 feet, give or take.

With #4 safely stashed away, I started detecting again. But I was really getting confused at this point as to where I'd detected and dug the previous ones. I had the general area but as to specifics, I was lost. After those hits I was digging anything that sounded close but came up with nothing interesting for the next 10m or so and wrapped it up for the evening. I drove home on Cloud 9 (the suspension is great on those) wondering if those four large coppers were all from a colonial pocket spill, some sort of meeting or business (not too much iron yet), or part of a stash.

...

#2 is obvious (though I have no clue about variants) but IDs on the others would be nice. (Though I'll be digging too.)

Coin #3. I think #1 and #4 are KGs of some sort but what is this one?

4 28.0mm 9.2g

Thanks, Neal, Bryce, and Jeff & Maria. I'm still kind of shaky from it and keep wondering how they got there in that one spot. Wonder if I'll ever top those 20 minutes from that hunt.

Sorry for the bad start on that. Three sheets to the wind simultaneously trying to put do something with finesse doesn't work very well.

Thanks, John! That KG George II is in nice shape!

Clean it with hot peroxide or another method? Any reason not to clean the 3 non-Fugio coppers?

Looks like my #4 is a KG I but I still haven't found the 3rd one yet. Any ideas?

THAT IS GREAT STUFF RICH.

Man, I am excited for you.

I wonder something like those coins, wouldn't you take them to a professional to clean?

Thanks, Rich.

I don't know. From what I've seen, it sounds like a lot of folks find KGs, so I'm guessing they're not worth a whole lot. Just checked eBay and it looks like even the Fugio wouldn't be worth that awful much. $1-200 if lucky, depending on how it cleaned up (unless maybe it was a rare variant--if it would clean up enough to tell). Still can't figure the third one. (Closest thing I've found for bust size and the flower and bar pattern is the Washington Success medal but it's not one of those.) I've never had a coin professionally cleaned and wouldn't know where to begin (other than googling or asking on forums about advice). The only coin-shop I've found close to me, I wouldn't trust with cleaning it.
