the school is closed....for the first day of deer season. Yep that is here and now! Because we live Up North there are so many people who take deer season off from school - students and teachers - there are not enough attending school to keep it open. It is estimated 25% of the people attend so 75% are out of school. They can't afford to keep the school open for 1/4 of the people. Also, they do not want school buses on the road...people shoot at the buses!!!!! Obviously some people have guns and don't know a deer does not wear blaze orange or travel in big yellow buses.

Speaking of 'stupid people', I got up this morning...even before getting my first cup of coffee...at 7 AM to find Casey was outside cleaning up trash. I went out to help. It appeared to her that someone had knocked over our trash bin and scattered the trash and animals got into the bags and scattered the trash all over.

Took a look further down the street:

Then I told Casey to leave things as they are and I went in to call 911. It was obvious that vandalism had taken place. Not sure at that time the extend of the vandalism. After calling 911 and having a Office dispatched to talk to me I took a walk around the area. Whoever the vandals were they didn't stop at just tipping over trash cans and scattering trash, they went through mail boxes and even threw mail into the street...after they opened some of the mail:

They smashed at least one mailbox:

And the 'Children at Play' and 'Neighborhood Watch' sign post they ripped out of the ground and tossed into the woods:

We have boxes attached to the mailbox posts and they succeeded in ripping one of them off the post and throwing it further down the street and bent the other one but couldn't get it off.

I do not understand the mindset of these individuals. Later I found out they had hit 3 of our 5 streets in this area plus had hit the main street down below our area. And...just think...they not only get today off for deer season..they are off Wed - Fri and have the weekend to for being bored or doing 'fun' things like this.

but since he sleeps at night with a blanket for a pillow...and sleeps so soundly we have thought he was dead several times...not much use as a watch dog. But if we had know what was going on I'd have gotten him up for a walk  :)

deer season day off but in February all schools are off 2 days for the Rodeo. Probably about 1/16 th of the kids go to the rodeo. When I taught HS I loved the Rodeo break - 4 day weekend to go fishing :) Steve in so az

I imagine across the nation there are lots of local days that are days off for some that others don't hear about.

I think down Mike from MI way they take the day off just to see Mike swing his detector

Growing up in upstate N.Y. all schools were closed on opening day of deer season, like you said everybody went, It was a very big deal. How did you make out with the vandals ?

there are some interesting things that make us wonder about some neighbors who have Christmas decorations and trash out...and nothing of theirs was touched. It is an older couple that live there but from time to time they hace car loads of younger people there...maybe kids and grandkids...but they always seem noisy and obnoxious...must be from downstate. We may never know.

that kinda thing happens all over. Country, City, etc... Shameful for sure! :(
