You never know what you will find at a tot lot

Hit a tot lot this morning at an elementary school that may be about twenty years old. Foound the usual hadnful of new coins and misc. items. Towords the end I got a "61" reading with my F2 that screamed zinc penny. At three inches, out popped an 1840 O half dime. Has a hole punched in it, which isn't all that unusual for a civil war era coin. Have no idea why it was there. Haven't found any other evedence of civil war activity in the area. One of lifes little mysteries. Glad I was digging zinc pennies today, or I would have missed this little gem. Love old silver.

keep on diggin'

Very nice, I think I would visit that place again, could be you are in a spot that was an old market or meeting place for trades and sales. Run that F2 as hot as you can get it, make it run deep.

Good luck if you return to that spot,

A turnpike collectors son took part of his dads coin collection and spent it for goodies so never know what those tots lose..

On the other hand sitting in a Mickey D's one of the locals showed us a picture of a early 1900's baseball field that once was locted in the exact spot. One wonders what is under the asphalt.

Also remembers tots have parents that bring them and swing them so now and then a nice gold ring shows up...

Unfortunately all our tot lots are gone replaced by those plastic contraptions....

Found a ladies gold ring two weeks ago in a tot lot. Don't set your discrimination too high.

Wow! :surprised: Was it a kid drop in the gravel/chips, or an old drop in the dirt? Theres been several posts this summer of old silver coins found in the totters..kid drops mainly...you know, little Johnny takes Grandpas shiney coins to school...luckily for me they are sticking to chips, gravel and sand around here for the most part...most of the new dollar coins I find come from totlots...Great find, Jimmyk! :clapping:

It was in the dirt next to the woodchips. Actually between the school and the chips. I was ignoring "bullet" numbers (55 os so) because that's where screw caps come in. But, my next visit I will rehit that area and dig all the bullet number signals. Who knows? Might be a campsite.

I have noticed as well, that there is fill dirt from other areas brought into a site that was constructed or re-did at some point and time.

I have found coins in fresh mulch that was dumped to a pile before placement as well.

Food for thought.
