Was not able to re-attach it. Bone was stickng out and had to trim that up. Cut the middle finger pretty good too. Had a good surgeon who worked on it, and it almost looks as good as it always was. Keep yours clean - and you should be O.K.

Oh yea, I cut mine off with a utility knife while cutting vinyl siding - believe it or not!!!

Wow, glad it worked out for you. How long before you could use finger again? Hear it takes longer when re-attached rather than amputation.
 
Here's some pics of mine today. As bad as it looks, it looked ten times worse before the stitches came out a few weeks back. All the black area will peal off later. I was missing everything under the fingernail but the base of the nail was still attached to finger. The tip (black area) was put back on. Was worried about it turning black but doc says that's normal and that it heals from inside out.
 
It will take some time to use that finger. Seems like everytime I would try to work with my hand after cutting it off, I would bang it on something. Really smarts when you do that. Cold weather really affects an injury like that. You will probably have to guard that finger for some time. Wear a finger stall if you like. I learned to wrap medical tape around my finger if I was going to work with my hands. The tape protects against bangs and scrapes that most people take for granted.

Yea, doesn't hurt anymore but if I bump it slightly it smarts. might have to detect left handed for a while. Thanks for tips on wrapping it in future with any kind of use.
 
Happy to say the finger is progressing well, but sorry to say that the black dead flesh on the end of the finger still hasn't fallen off yet. Looks like the finger nail is going to fall off as well as it looks like a new finger nail is coming in under it and the old one is starting to pop off. The finger is way less sensitive now and I can use it for moderate things such as picking up a glass. I asked the doc if I could soak it for a long time in water to try to remove the dead flesh at the end (it's real crusty) but he said not to do that and let it do it's own thing. I see what you mean about wrapping it to protect it when working and will do something like that. Any tips on doing that? Bandage tape or some other form of material?

My home computer is on the fritz so I've been mostly using the local library's, and so I still type one handed there because I don't want to use it on that crusty/scummy keyboard there even though there is no open wounds or anything these days. Just don't want to have to wash it more than I have to. I'm house sitting for my brother over the next three days so I'm able to type for the first time two handed here. Wow, how I missed being able to type fast (and long). :biggrin:
 
Well, thought all was well for the finger. I have been able to use it digging in the dirt and such for a while now. There was a bit of bone sticking out the end where the dead tip have pealed away like a scab but figured that was a simple matter to snip off by the doc on the next visit. Turns out I needed minor reconstructive surgery to remove that bone and also to remove some flesh near the end that was causing the fingernail to turn upwards. He shortened the finger a little to address all that and have enough skin to pull over things. Still got a fingernail, just it'll be a bit shorter and things.

Doesn't hurt nearly as bad as the initial injury did. I'm just bummed that I'm back to having stitches for another month and it'll be close to 2 months before I can use the finger tip to do things like dig in the dirt again. I've also been out of work and so it'll be around 2 more months before I can restart the job hunt. Boredom is an evil thing.

I'll try to get some pics up of the finger in a day or two.

You can just see the new fingernail growing out. He cut a lump of flesh off that was in front of it and the rest of the finger in front of the nail for that matter. Still a lot of dried blood I need to clean off and he only used 2 or 3 stitches. He said once it heals and the fingernail grows out more the finger will look pretty normal, just a bit shorter. Surprisingly it really doesn't hurt even when I haven't taken a vike for 10 or 12 hours. As said, it should heal faster this time because it's not as damaged as the initial injury. Doc says in under 2 months I can start using it again like normal and start my job search again.

I cut the end of my finger off too when I was young, they put it back on, it still works. Got tired of holding my hand over my head to reduce the pain. Hope you recover soon. As for your first post, my boss is Mexican, almost everyone there speaks Spanish or another language, only a quarter are real Americans, and I only make half the pay that I made at my last job. I'm a R & D Chemist, scary thought isn't it?

11 days and counting until I get these blasted stitches out and can start using that hand/finger in normal fashion again. So bored...
 
I finally get the stiches out today from this second operation! Been so bored as this has gone on for 5 or 6 months where I couldn't do much. Did have a small span of time when the stitches came out the first time where I could hunt and do other things. Wasn't expecting to have to have it worked on again so this has been killing me boredom wise. This time around the finger is much more healed and further along, so I expect to be able to do things right away. Have to keep anti-bacteria cream on it for another day or two and then I can start taking showers with that hand again. Besides hunting I need to do a lot of spring cleaning and till the weeds out of my veggy garden. Glad I was able to plant back before this second operation. So much to do and look forward to now and also resume the job search. Very excited this appears to be all over! Watch your fingers using knives and working on stuff. You DO NOT want to go through the shear boredom this puts you through!
 
So yesterday I figured I could finaly get my hands dirty and start doing some spring cleaning. Decided to weed my garden and ended up causing a huge open blister on my other hand. Now I have to hold off on cleaning the garage for another day or two...It's that bad. :rage: Nothing like screwing up my hands again when I was just able to start getting them dirty and doing some work. Just my luck.
