Young lad with Ace 150

Wood

New member
I purchased an Ace 150 for my 11 year old son. We went to a local beach (Northwest of Edmonton) recently and he is now hooked. We didn't find anything of value, a few coins, lots of junk and P tabs, a few bullets and one hot wheels car:happy: He is relentless in searching but is having a hard time pinpointing and distinguishing metals. Also in some cases, after digging at a known target it seems to disappear. I'm sure with time and patience he will learn this machine better, but youth and exuberance take precedence. It's fun to watch him light up at the sound of a target, every dig is a treasure and he told me that all rings, jewelery and sparkly things go straight to mom.

Anyway, just my first post here and anyone with hints on this machine or comments for a new newbie would be appreciated. We'll stick around and post pics if we find something worthy.

As in Alberta, Canada? Uh oh, John has a couple of competitors!

Yes, Alberta Canada. We live near Alberta Beach. I've browsed this forum and have seen John's posts and finds. I don't think he has much to worry about.

I know what you mean. Big John B. is a true Force of Nature.

Just keep at it and it will come, just like the movie Field of Dreams.

Glad to hear you boy is hooked on metal detecting. There are worse things to be hooked on.:)-)
Maybe you will be able to trade up to the Ace 250 for him. It's eaiser to pinpoint with and will
give him a better and happier MD experience. If you can afford to get a hand held pinpointer
(you two can share for awhile) that will help find the target. I bought the Garrett Propointer and
its a real peach! This is a good experience for him. Bring the two of you even closer.

Happy Hunting.

Welcome to the forum ! Good to see you and your son are enjoying the hobby.

And who knows how many others? That machine has found it's share of silver & gold rings along with some silver coins too. Now be honest.....did you really buy it for your 11 year old son? I bet he hardly uses it.;) Maybe our paths will soon cross. I am going water hunting tomorrow out of town.......maybe I'll get a coin or two, or perhaps a ring.

Welcome to a great forum. As far as the best mode to hunt in, use the jewellery mode, as that will pick up the freshly dropped new Canadian dimes and quarters. Hope the two of you really get some good finds. :)

Glad to hear your son is interested in the hobby and off to an early start. It's a great hobby and can pay for itself. The 250 would have been a lot easier for him to learn and use as pinpointing is about the toughest procedure to master but he should get the hang of it soon. If you have any problems you know where to come. Wish him the best of luck.

Bill

Thanks for the warm welcome folks. We'll see how the 150 works out for him. He is a pretty dedicated and intense little guy, I'm sure he will get it sorted. The dry summer here has made the ground rock hard and difficult to dig, so I think we will spend our remaining time on the beach, winter is close by and days are short. And for John, my wife asked the same question when I suggested a detector for my son Quinn, who is it really for? Quinn has told me that I can borrow it any time I want:thumbup:

Those signals that come from empty holes are annoying but here is what may be happening.
A nail in the ground rusts away to nothing except a blob of rusty dust. The Ace may be hitting on this concentrated dust and giving off a signal. Once you dig, the patch of metallic dust just gets spread around and the signal is no longer there when you re-scan the hole.
If you see a patch of deep red or orange that may be a clue as to what caused the signal.
Or it could be tiny leprechauns running off with their pot of gold.

So here's the loot. We only got out four times to three different beaches, maybe a total of six hours. No big treasures, but we did have fun and it's another excuse to spend time with my boy. Oh, and for John-Edmonton............notice the ring!!!!

Lots of goodies found in that hunt. Congrats !!

Congratulations on a great haul. I am new to detecting too - hubby and I have owned ours for three and a half weeks, and it does take time and patience to learn to use, but the rewards are great. Hope your son has a great time detecting. My hubby (Whadda) started at a young age and still loves it to this day. In fact I think he is keener now than ever! Happy Hunting!

well come, Wood, great to see you and your son sharing something as rewarding as detecting, it is real fun finding treasures but just as much fun learning the history of the places you hunt,, I watch a couple of you tube vids every now and then, there is a you fella on there called nuggetnoggin, every one should check him out,and his dad goes most places with him taking the videos, really cool,
I started when I was 9 with a Kmart toy, then moved to radio shack, but gave it up for 20 years as time and money was not on my side, but we are back at it again, and loving every minute of it,,just remember any questions these guys are to be able to help,HH
cheers Roger
