You're Guess Is As Good As Mine - What Is It ?

Hello Seekers!

Okay! I don't have the foggiest idea of what this 'thing-ah-ma-jig is. It's approximately 6" long and the ball is approximately 1.5" in width. It's looks as if it may have been originally mated to a hardwood pole of sorts but for what purpose? The property, where the item was dug, is an old farm but the house no longer stands. It's extremely heavy and my guess is its made of brass or bronze. Okay gals
and guys ... put your thinking caps on...ha!

That is off of an old mule collar . It went around a mule that was used in pilling plows and things. It was or should have been on wood. Go to chimacumtack.com and click on draft horse harness and scroll down and click on second picture.

Hey '7',
I checked out the source you mentioned but all the pictures, with the balls at the top of the harness, appear to be one piece with the harness but I'm sure they're connected some how. The one I found also has a screw hole on the bottom of the curved shaft that would be used to mount to a wood or metal shaft. So far your guess is at the top of the list.

Well, I would say that it has something to do with farming! :) May God Bless! Ma Betty

Looks a lot like an early artificial hip implant.

n/t

My guess is that it is an old brass or bronze thing-a-ma-jig.:yikes: Sorry Martin for stealin' your quote.

It could be , But i know that my uncles had them in 1970 on some of there horses and mules that pulled wagons.

When I get a chance, I think I'll take it to my local museum. I'm sure they can not only I.D. it but date it as well. Thank you all for your thoughts. Without your ideas, I wouldn't have known what it was at all.

You have a horse hame knob. I will send you an email.

Hey ... Thanks Mike and everyone else too. From the information Mike sent me, I see that some of the old horse hame knobs are being used as a topper for a walking stick (cane). Maybe I'll do that w/ the one I've found? Now that we know what it is, it would be interesting to find out when the one I found was produced? I think I'll use my magnifying glasses to see if there is a date and or production # inside the shaft.
