Hi folks

iwent back to the school this afternoon intending to
stay just an hr.The 1st signal screamed DIG I got a
nice .2 oz ST.Christopher medla marked sterling on the back..
a GOOD start to say the least..then the kids came

about 10-11 to 14 id say. They were interestied ( as ID be) in
the detector and aksed lots of ??S But it was apparent tey
were gonna follow me around. I found 3 pennies gave 1 to each
and told them I had to leave

What do you folks sugets when kids gather? im not rude or cheap
but I dont want to go overbaord either

I just casually stroll away, But if they catch me and start asking Questions I'm more than happy to show them how it works and some the coins I've found, along with the nails ,safety pins, screws and other trash.It's their place to play,I'm just a visitor,I can always go back on Saturday or Sunday at sunrise . Pretty much guaranteed to be void of the rug rats at that time.Also if one of them wants to hold you're metal detector and try it out then all of them want to try it out,just say the batteries have gone dead
 
I saw a post on a site relating to this subject. The guy said a kid befriended him and he spent some time with the young man and his father was so impressed with his patience that he told the detector that if could come hunt his 100 plus year old house!! I haven't had it happened but if it does I will spend some time with them and hey you never know??:detecting:
 
I do not normally have much trouble with the little kids being curious and I will often give them a coin or two.

Typical conversation:

Hey mista wot's that thing, wot are ya doing?.... Metal detecting....... Wot are ya lookin for?..... Metal, coins ,whatever I can find..... How much did it cost?.... A lot. Can I have a go?..... No...... Your stupid, have you got a job?...... No, don't need one I'm a millionair.

From one teenager dropkick at the beach:

Hey mate, ya won't find any gold here.........I'm just looking for coins and other bits and pieces.........Can I have yr detector?...... No it's not for sale...... I don't want to buy it I'll just take it!.......You can try sport, but you will look pretty funny with a metal detector wrapped around your head and trying to walk with a pick up your a...s!..... Stupid prick, I awta punch yr head in....... Go for it moron, I hope you know how to fight dirty because I do........Walks off mumbling something about bringing his mates back..... I figure it's time to look for another beach.
 
Should've ask him if he ever hobbled around on crutches. Got some idiot like that one time and I told him he wasn't too bright, bracing a man with a long, sharp, weapon in his hand. With a dumb look on his face he replies," What weapon?" I pulled my two foot long probe up and waved it under his nose and replied, " This weapon."
I continued, " I can run this clear through you then stand there and watch the handle bob up and down with each remaining beat of your heart." He left, mumbling quietly.

Now that would be worth videoing.

I think the most common questions are "What are you Doing" and "How much is it worth" Maybe those who ask How Much are trying to decide if it's worth nicking it.
I remember one nice old lady at the beach who got up from the sand, came over to me and said, "Don't come any closer I don't like your type"
Yeah, still trying to figure out what "My Type" is.
The good days outweigh he bad ones. You know the good days, they are the ones when you spend more time meeting friendly people than detecting and getting into some great conversations about this hobby and the things you find and you get achance to show that you are not some unfortunate mental retard and that you can even speak and write and that you have a wife and kids and are actually a normal person enjoying a great outdoor hobby.

Best advice? Stay out of schools during operating hours. This includes "after hours," since kids and faculty are still there well into the late afternoon. It is hard, at best to detect, with a gaggle of knee apes following you around.

But in today's fear laden, security minded atmosphere, it can likely get you a cease and desist command pretty quick. Contrary to popular belief, schools are NOT open to the public. Most school people look askance at strange men noodling around the grounds when the kids are about.

It doesn't matter that your taxes generally pay for their existence. The bottom line is someone administers and has control over the school and the children there. You are unlikely to be seen as harmless in their eyes. Schools are for the weekend.

this is the cllosed school i mentioned before. The kids came by
after school..I want to be a nice guy without being a chump
if you know what i mean..They weretn old enuff to be a problem
asfar as theft liek some replies mentioned. Like i sad they were
maybe 10-11 yrs old up to maybe 14.

Just want to be a good guy and be able to keep detetcting there

Ooooops, my bad. I didnt know it was closed.

In that case, I usually entertain a few questions - and make sure they see all the trash I find. I wouldnt even mention coins or jewelry, but I WOULD let them get an eyefull your trash. In fact I usually keep a handfull of loose trash on top of my pouch. Then I can reach in and pull out a heaping handful of pulltabs and grubby foil balls. They dont stay interested in such stuff for long.

Then just tell them that if there are no more questions, you would like to ge back to your work. Kids dont usually have time for stuff like work or dirty trash, and generally want little more to do with you after that.

NOTE: there may be one or two that remain interested because it is in their nature. These are future detectorists. Be patient with them and then insist that you be allowed to go on. Tell them youll come back next time, and they can check you out then.
 
There are only very few school yards that aren't locked down
tight in my area. More areas are being fenced and locked during
certain hours in other places. That's more or less how I became
a sports field hunter. Every now and then they are even locked down.
I find if I go far enough out most of the kids are too lazy to walk out to
where I am. If they start making their way out to me I just go further
out. Very rarely do they get out to me face to face. If they do get close
I start detecting very, very slowly and don't dig anything at all. Absolutely
no digging. I have found digging only arouses their curiosity. They soon get
bored with me and go away. I don't want to make my metal detecting a
spectator sport. Nice score on the St. Christopher medal Ron. Kids lose
all kinds of things and if you have access to a school yard I would get out
very early on a nonschool day. Good hunting to you ! Gene

I would not encourage any kids I did not know to hang around with me. If they asked me what I found, I would show them the trash and say that's all I ever find, like bottle caps and pull tabs, etc. Not digging when they are around was good advice, also.
 
Well at 9 am today Ill be back on site....Ill; hunt till 11
then call it a morning..As usual all advise is much
apprecited
