Zinc penny?

Was doing a little air testing the other day.Tried a zinc penny,a shiny one at that, threshold hum dissapeared and minelab was as quiet as a mouse. Also, how do you guys go on "sound" as you say, but a quarter, dime, nickel sound so much different on edge and even on partial edge ,appreciate the input.scott

What's your question? I've been fooled more than once on deep zinc pennies. They sound soooo good, checking the depth meter, they are 6-9 inches deep. AHHHHH, got me a keeper Then get that corroded zinc at 6-9 inches I'll never be good enough to tell the difference, but always have to dig that "sweet signal"! Often wonder how recent junk gets to the same depth as good old coins? But, that's the fun of it, you never know for sure what you have until you dig it up....

My question was,Why did the expl not see the zinc signature, like I said the threshold hum dissapeared and the explorer could not tell the zinc was there?thanks, scott

Like Chris said it sounds like you are using a program and If you reject the screw cap you will also not get a signal on a zinc penny or a IH, Do you test on the penny in factory presets, or Iron mask at a -8 and you should beable to get s signal on it.

I will have to agree with the other guys, you may want to check your settings. If everything is set correct and you are still not getting a hit maybe it needs to be sent to Minelab. Good luck.

As far as your question about hunting on "sound", Here is my take. I am no way the best Explorer user but I am getting better every time I go out. 9 out of 10 times I hunt by sound/tone not Digital ID or Smartfind. The reason for this is just as you said, coins sound different on edge but they also hit different on edge on the ID. I found a 1945 Merc dime only 3 inches deep. The reason I feel it was still there was because it was on edge. It sounded different and hit at 8-29 on Dig/ and was all over the place on Smartfind. SO why did I dig..? Why not I guess I decided. Just practice and when in doubt dig you never know what you will find. Good luck.
