I posted this 1848 "Rough and Ready" Major General Zachary Taylors Campaign button on the finds Forum earlier. I wasn't satisfied with my cleaning job so I took to the next level today and was hoping I didn't destroy it. The first picture was water and a soft brush with so so results. The second was after todays cleaning session. The third is a page out of Alberts book it has a RV 50 rating.
Zachary was our 12th president and indecently was the first president elected that had never served a political office prior. He died before finishing his term.
It read 10 in the ground on the Equinox at a depth of 7 inches
Field 2
sensitivity max
no ground balance
no noise cancel
no iron bias
all metal

Oh my God.!! You dug up presidential historical memorabilia from 1848..! And I would like to repeat that was from 1848. It may or may not be worth a lot of money..? But this is a major conversation piece at bare minimum.
NICE FIND..!

Thanks fastdraw
I would like to think it has some value but its not for sale LOL RV 50 is the rarest button I have found so far!

It really is outstanding, laplander!!! Cleanup looks good. One for the books!! Congrats.

That is cool! What steps did you use to clean it Jeff?
Water and a soft brush was the first.
This ought to raise some eyebrows step two was red jewelers rouge {soft abrasive} and a 6 inch buffing wheel on a bench grinder. I worked slowly with light pressure concentrating on just the spots I wanted to remove the white chalky material. Focusing on leaving patina the whole process probably took 10 minutes.

I would call that method tough love. Works well

Another nice recovery Jeff. Congrats. TID of 10 would have surprised me. I'm guessing that is about the size of a quarter?

You are correct about the size, it was very deep and was close to the foundation so could have been in close proximity to ferrous targets.
