Anyone hunt Civil War Relics in Atlanta 1980's?

I am curious to know what it was like in the 80's metal detecting for Civil War relics in metro Atlanta back in the 1980's. Areas like Decatur, Collier road, Cobb county, Dallas, GA.

If you know or know of anyone please send me a private message.

Thanks

I did back in around 1983-1988 back before you didn't have to worry about being murdered simply for the reason that you were white. We hunted around West Atlanta and the hunting was pretty good. Today in these same areas your life expectancy would be that of a sand flea aboard the Parris Island Depot in a platoon of 1st phase Marine Recruits. In short, not very long atall.

Would love to hunt that area around Utoy creek, but what you say is correct.

how how many hunted with you or did you see detecting back then. In six years I have only run into one relic hunter in urban Atlanta where I hunt. I get the impression that the relic hunting with metal detectors was pretty popular back then.

Interesting thread! An item on my metal detecting bucket list is to find my first minie' ball. I used to live in the Atlanta area back in 2005-2007 and was told (by an old timer) to go east of Atlanta following Sherman. He gave me some specific spots to check but never did get the time to explore them. Ugh!

It was pretty popular back then. I know there is still some relics there, but you have to ask yourself if it would be worth taking the chance of being murdered......and that is the reality of the matter. A total shame too.
You are right Confetrit. My brother use to live just outside of Atlanta. He had to move because it became so dangerous. You’d have to work hard and fast, not turning your back, working thru the modern day bullets to dig a Minnie ball. Atlanta has, along with some others, become the armpit of the south.

Yes indeed. There was a Relic Hunter hunting solo in the same area as used to hunt about 15 years ago. He was kneeling bent down digging a target with his back turned. He was rendered unconscious by a blow to the head from a group of thugs. When he regained conciousness, his detector was gone, his wallet and I'D were gone along with his keys and vehicle. As horrible as this was he was lucky in that he wasn't killed. We live about 40 miles east of Atlanta. There is Absolutely Nothing in Atlanta for us. All I can say is" General Sherman, where are you now when Atlanta needs you the most? "

I basically will not hunt or even drive through back streets anywhere south of I-20 east and west of Atlanta. I feel sorry for the good folks that have to live in those areas. I live in North Atlanta and it has been pretty good since the middle 80's as far a being a good place to live. But that is changing too fast for my liking. Friend of my a detective supervisor said he turned in his resignation and 3 other supervisors did the same thing once they got to a point where their pension was secure. Why? Liberal judges, inept liberal prosecutors and lots of thugs committing serious crimes. Confetrit. that guy is lucky to be alive. The drug dealers and thugs in those areas shoot & kill people every night. That that dominates the local evening news in terms of crimes in Atlanta.

I guess I ought to be happy I still have some CW hunt locations where I can hunt without being fearful. And hey a brand new detector to start off 2022! CTX3030 - it is just about perfect for hunting really trashy urban hunting locations which describes where I hunt. The 800 was not suited for the task.

How sad that these things happen because of politicians who only think about votes. In my country, the same is happening. Not on that scale, but it won't take many years.

Draco, what country do you live in? It seems most of the world are having problems. I used to fly into a few European countries (US Navy) back in the '60's . Absolute wonderful people. Never did make it to eastern Europe. Most politicians could destroy a steel ball bearing.

Right now I live in the Canary Islands (Spain) a very quiet and wonderful place.
illegal immigration, is causing some problems

I understand the Sweden is having the same problems. They get into Europe through Greece and go to the country with the best benefits. I remember when the US and European countries had borders and enforced the border laws. Now they don't and see what is happening.
But how are they getting to an Island? Swimming, boats or just flying in from other European countries once they get to Europe illegally?
Of course in the US they just waltz in from Mexico and are welcomed by our government with all kind of benefits.

In Europe there are "masked" mafias as NGOs, which take them on mother ships and bring them to the coast.

best of luck to you Pulltab with the New CTX3030 in 2022. He safe out there.

People are entitled to their own opinions. If you do not agree with someone, you should be allowed to dispute the issue in a gentlemanly or ladylike way. Shouting others down, or resorting to ad hominem attacks, only demonstrates someone has not thought through their own arguments, has no convincing proofs to offer, and are not concerned with persuading others to thoughtfully consider the fallacies of their positions. If society is only concerned with shutting others up or bullying others to silence then there is no opportunity for understanding and reconciliation. Such an approach only deepens the divides, fosters greater unwillingness to listen, and will eventually result in complete disassociation.

Every day we have the choice to be part of the problem or part of the solution.

Calling bs on your story
Hey Atlanta guy, you can call bs all you want. I Do Not make up stories and post away. This account did in fact happen and sadly, was an actual event. I know the exact place this attack happened, as I hunted this exact area many, many times earlier. That is what made this attack personal to me. As Gump would say, "That is All I have to say about that!"

I live and hunt in Atlanta. Since it looks like a bunch of racist pussies have replied to your post, i can tell you that its fine as long as you dont go on private property, same as anywhere else.
Wow, you are on a roll here. Calling dirty names and everything. Tell me the truth.....did you think of this all by yourself, or did someone have to help you?

Are you truly a new member here, or an older member going under a new name? You sound awfully familiar. You are off to a great start, calling members Liars on things you obviously know Nothing about, being Insulting, and calling folks racists and other obscene names. What a guy! Welcome to the forum here Atlanta guy. You have already brought something out in the open about yourself, and that is you perceive folks as Racists when they speak the truth. If you don't like what they say, or you don't agree with them, they are automatically a Racist. You can only beat a Dead Horse so much. Have a great day.
