Simplex vs. EMI

OK, so I have seen this issue reported before in multiple forums and FB groups. I went out to try and find my silver quarter (see my post on depth). I turn on the Simplex and it goes wild. Even before ground balancing and then after - VDI going crazy even when I hold the detector with coil well above ground and not near fence etc. Lowered sensitivity and really didn't help at all. No, I didn't have pinpointer on and didn't have my phone with me. Restarted several times to no avail. The Simplex was for all practical purposes, useless (I was using stock coil. All modes tested)

I then gave up and took detector to the basement (no metal in floor except floor drains). It worked flawlessly (other than continuing issue with quarter depth - save this for another time).

So, my question is: I have overhead power lines for the neighborhood very close but they have never affected me like this. Does EMI fluctuate? Could it be some days are worse than others?

Thanks in advance!

Sometimes it has happened to me with other detectors. It can be faulty power lines, nearby radars, and even faulty telephone poles.

EMI does fluctuate and can come from many forms. Very little way to get around emi, its all around us, just some times worse then others. Even when one can't hear it, silent emi, chances are some is having an affect on your detector. I've gotten in the habit of running through the various frequency (change) channels, even when I can't hear any emi, and try and find the quietest channel. HH jim tn

Hunted an old abandoned school site yesterday using the Simplex with large stock coil along with a couple of hunting buddies. The site had been made into a park with a community center building, playground equipment, basketball court and baseball field and typical open grassy areas. Wasn't noticing any emi much until I got closer to one of the three streets bordering the spot, but after a while I realized I hadn't been recovering any coins deeper then about 5". And most were only 2-4" deep and those that were 4-5" deep didn't really sound all that good.

One of my hunting buddies, who was using his Deus, came over and asked me how I was doing. I replied nothing but clad and that I was concerned about not hitting any deeper coins. He mentioned his results were about the same as mine.

So as not to drag this out, my other buddy was using a CTX 3030 and having pretty much the same results as my Deus buddy and I were. What was baffling to all three of us was that the previous Sat we had hunted the spot, me with my Nox 600 and my two buddies each with their CTX 3030's and between us we had dug a dozen + wheat cents and 3 silver dimes. Nothing all that deep as we recalled, but some coins were 6-8" deep.

Did something change from one Sat to the next? Or, did we just not get our coils over deeper and older coins like the previous Sat? HH jim tn

Before you ever start swinging hold the detector up parallel to your head and swing. If the noise gets worse that's EMI. The simplex will "simply" be inoperable in certain areas at the frequency it runs at. This will include areas like yards close to high lines. I hunt one old site with the Deus and when the EMI gets too bad I, turn the frequency up till it becomes quite as a church mouse w/o losing much depth.

Power lines don't seem to bother my Simplex running 2.77.
Though
Anywhere near wifi.
Even my phone's wifi.
Drives it crazy with stock coil.
The SP 24 runs much better.

I guess I was reasonably close to the router/modem but would this affect it sometime but not others?
When they transmit. Even not in use they log up every so many seconds.
Most WIFI's have a minimum functioning range of 300 ft. High powered ones can go a 1000'.
If you're at home.
Turn off your wifi and any florescent lights.
You'll notice it runs much smoother.
Those plasma tubes really radiates noise.
Mercury vapor (bluish) and high pressure sodium (Yellow) street lights can be noisy as well.
All metal detectors are highly tuned radio transmitters and radio receivers.

Ground conditions can change from week to week.
Moisture content can have a great deal to do with depth.
After a day after a heavy rain or spring thaw.
Condition's are typically at their best.
Moist ground is More conductive.
And dry ground least conductive.
Remember any weather around the time of those hunts ?
Try that site again.
Specifically after an event that leaves the ground soaked. Remember it takes roughly 24 hrs to soak in.
Good Luck
