Equinox Locks up!!

Hi there. I have only had my Equinox 800 for a couple of months so I am not sure if what I am experiencing is normal. When I repeatedly swing the coil over multiple targets that are densely packed together, the target ID will get stuck on “- -“ and it will no longer give a signal tone over any of the targets. If I hold the coil still, not covering any targets, it seems to return to normal after about 30 seconds.

Before this happens, the detector seems to work well and the ID will bounce around from value to value as the coil swings over each target but it reaches a point at where the detector seems to get confused and just locks up. This happens regardless of the targets, trash or good targets. For example, I found 6 coins (2 nickeled, 2 pennies, a dime, and a quarter) all in about a 1.5 ft circle and the detector behaved as described. It will also do this with densely packed trash targets.

I have only used the detector at the beach, in dry sand, in beach mode 1 with the factory default settings with the exception of the noise canceler. Ground balance also at factory default and tracking turned off. I tried a 6 inch coil this weekend with the same results. Is it the machine or something I am doing?? Maybe swinging the coil too fast??

Any help/suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Check your recovery speed setting I use 4-7 I have had the same happen once in awhile I just hit the pin point button to reset or you can try a factory reset by holding down the power button.

I agree with Mark , also slow your swing down. The machine needs time to recover/reset itself before it can try to id next target. Multiple targets gives bouncy numbers. I've had my machine at least 3years now and I am still learning new tweaks . The more hours you have on the machine , the better you will be at techniques. Had a Safari before the 800 and it would do the same thing . Still use it once in a while , but the Nox is a lot lighter and better balanced. HH Ron

I'm curious to know what in the electronics needs resetting if no auto tracking is on. That seems like a flaw to me, but I am definitely going to monitor it since I am lately focusing on trashy sites and a recovery speed of 7. I've had the "- -" display and blew it off. There was a squeak of a high conductor tone in there when I first went over it, and that kinda seems to be the first tone that disappears.

I guess it is what it is. I'll try the pinpoint trigger next time. Thanks.

First timeout yesterday with new Equinox it did the same thing at least 2 or 3x... I also hit the pinpoint button which after going back into detect mode seemed to help... I definitely will be playing with the settings after I get maybe 10-20 hours in... had to lower the sensitivity also down to 15 just to work in the trashy area...

I've own 2 NOX 800s and one for almost 3 yrs. Lots of beach hunting and have drowned the NOX twice. Your problem is definitely weird! Suggest a factory reset.

Any update? Did you call Minelab? I would call them.

I’ve had my Nox 800 for a few years and have not experienced this issue. As others have already suggested, check your recovery speed setting and slow down your swing to see what happens. I typically run my recovery on 5, but my swing is about 3-4 seconds side to side. Also, what version of firmware is your Nox currently running?
