No sound 705

I'm not sure if this has been posted before. I done a forum search and nothing came up or the search engine was taking entirely way to long to show any results (10 minutes wait for results). So here goes nothing. I bought the 705 dual pack in November last year and when I went on a night hunt the other day I started to have some technical issues with my detector. About 2 hours into my night hunt I lost the sound in my headphones. Thinking it was the headphones so I switched to the onboard speaker. That worked fine for another hour or two and then no sound was coming out of the onboard speaker. I don't normally use the back lighting on this detector and this night I was constantly using it, then I changed batteries and even unplugged the coils a couple of times thinking that might have been a problem. The sound would come back on the onboard speaker but no sound when plugging the headphones back in. And like clock work the speaker stopped working again. I know I have missed some targets which to me is no biggie but spending almost 6 hours on the beach passing up targets because of the MD malfunctioning is no good. By sunrise I had enough with this machine and decided to go home.

This morning I headed out to a local park as so I wouldn't be to far from the house and again no sound from the headphones or the onboard speaker. I didn't drop my MD or get the control box wet so I'm not sure why the speakers or the headphone jack doesn't want to work anymore. I spoke with another MD'er at the beach and he says Minelab is notorious for the sound to quit working. Does anyone have any ideas why this is happening and can it be fixed? If this is going to be an ongoing problem Minelabs MD's then it's not worth keeping this machine and I probably will not buy another MD from Minelab if the sound is an issue with all of their products. Thanks

I ended up talking to someone from KellyCo and I have my control box packed up and ready to ship out to them. I guess it's still under warranty since I bought it in November of last year

Thanks Jamie!

WYGOLD; it is NOT a common occurrence, and even less so with Xterra's than others. As a matter of fact, Xterra's are far more reliable than a lot of other machines, regardless of manufacturer.

Idk a few people have told me this who also uses Minelab products, some from YouTube and some that I met while detecting. I found out what the problem is when I talked with KellyCo's repair service center. They knew right away what the issue is before I could finish and because I don't have a environmental cover for it, it's going to happen every time I go to the beach. Oh don't get me wrong I love the xterra 705 and it is my very first machine. I choose this one over the Garrett At Pro, if I would have know that the salt in the air will cause the machine to maulfunction I would have bought the cover a long time ago. I don't remember seeing anything in the manual that the salt in the air will cause the machine to not work properly. It only suggests is that the control box is not waterproof and that the environmental cover should be used if your going to be outside in the rain. Being from Southern California we don't get much rain and if we do then I usually don't go out in it. Too many darn people don't know how to drive in the rain down here.

I don't know where you would have gotten the idea that the only time you were to use an environmental cover was if you were going to use it outside in the rain? Page 54 of the manual clearly says: "Although it has been designed to be weather resistant, it is advisable to protect the control box in wet conditions".

Even if you don't get splashed while detecting along the beach, sea air is full of moisture. You're lucky it may just be a moisture problem at this time. When the salt air moisture evaporates, you'll have highly corrosive salt deposits left on the electronics.

http://www.arl.noaa.gov/faq_ac18.php

Droplets are "emitted" from the ocean through wave action, etc., and the coastal atmosphere is "laden" with this sea-salt aerosol. If the humidity is high -- above maybe 60-70%, the aerosol is in the form of droplets. When the humidity decreases, the droplets dry out and the aerosol is in the form of dry particles. Since the humidity is often pretty high in coastal areas, droplets are often present.

My 705 just lost audio all og a sudden, and has never been exposed to any moisture or any abuse. It was in a bag and stored and audio quit right after the startup . It seems from what I see in various forums that this is a more common occurrence than some minelab reps and defenders like to admit. Anyone able to advise the fix, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I had one that did that. Opened it up and a connector wasn't pushed on all the way. Same thing happened on a whites I had. I think I remember some saying the speakers went bad but that easy to test too.

Is it just the speaker that doesn't work? Does it work with headphones?
Often the headphone jack is the culprit, which is an easy fix.

This is the first I have heard of speaker problems on the XTerras..
I have an XTerra 50 that I bought in 2006, and have not had any issues with it at all.
I do keep a cover on it, but have used it in light rain and at the beach without any issues.

I bought a used 705 a few years back ,, and had no speaker on it ,, had to use headphones to use the thing .
I don't think I've ever used mine w/o phones. There are important nuances to the tones that likely can't be heard well enough w/o them.
