BC question

jkline asked me a question about BC setting on his Legend. He was on the OR coast a couple weeks ago and no matter what setting he used bottle caps sounded off. He asked me what my experience was with it and well, actually somewhat forgot I was using it.
I’ve been running in an older city park and it was not uncommon to hit caps around the different benches, volleyball pit, horseshoe pit etc. When I upgraded to 1.11 I set BC to 3 just to experiment. Since (about 3 times out now) I have yet to dig a bottle cap, just didnt realize/remember that BC was on.
Yesterday I went back to the park but turned off BC hoping to get a cap and then specifically experiment in natural conditions. Hit what I was pretty sure was a cap, turned on BC and signal basically disappeared and or was significantly weakened. Changed my angle and was getting a second target signal, increased Recovery and believed I may have a copper penny in with a bottle cap. Dug up the target and had both a cap and a clad dime!
So two part question. What may jkline being doing that BC not apparently working. I’m assuming he was in Beach mode so…. Secondly, with BC off and cap as the target the dime apparently was somewhat masked. While in BC I noted VID numbers were 1-2 points lower. When I scanned above ground the numbers were where I expected them so ground may effect the readings slightly.
So far while digging with BC on I have not dug any caps in the plug so assuming this works as intended.
Thoughts?

It may just be the type of BCs he encountered. Did he keep any of them to experiment with?

I've been playing around alot with it, inland and beach, and am pretty underwhelmed by it. Old caps, new caps, aluminum, steel... doesn't matter.

It doesn't null anything out, like iron, so if it tells you anything, it must be subtle and I'm missing it.

My opinion is it is just a corporate marketing gimmick, and will just leave the setting off.

I have found it pretty effective on older BCs at around level 3.

if you set the BC to high yes it mask targets I run BC 3-5 and have had no issues

you just have to remember when you set more filtering you are running the risk of missing good targets
What is the default setting for BC in all the modes

Default setting is 0. Other than forgetting I had set it to 2 I just didnt realize I was not really getting bottle caps. There are newer caps in the areas I hunt but they dont ring as high as the older rusted out ones.
It amazes me how many caps you find in the ground when trash cans are only feet away.

I've been digging bottle caps for a few years just to get them out of the way. I would hate to miss the faint signal of a seated dime or such because I couldn't hear while a bottle cap is near. Even if there is nothing else that is detected when I remove them, there might be after the halo left by it erodes away. However I am retired, have lots of time, the caps are not overly deep here in the desert, and I just like getting out and looking.

Great strategy if you have the time

It's easier for the lazy slobs to flip them on the ground than it is to lift a finger to toss them in a trash can. :(

Great strategy if you take the time. Bottlecaps hide targets in a pretty big area around them, coins and rings do not. You can hide a lot of coins and rings from the detector by placing them near a bottle cap. If a person is hunting in a bottle cap infested area and do not remove them, you are saving time by only covering the area between their influence and not having to dig targets near them.
